The White Lotus Review: Comedically Accurate & Painfully Authentic!
I love a good murder mystery and this HBO miniseries did not disappoint. The White Lotus is a comedic satire created and directed by Mike White and stars an ensemble cast of wacky characters on vacation in a Hawaiian resort.
Right away, I knew I was going to like The White Lotus. HBO spares no expense when it comes to production value and this show displays all the elements of a great murder mystery. Eccentric, characters all with seemingly disguised motivations and great use of overshadowing.

In fact, there are alot of seeds sprinkled in from the very beginning to give you insight to these characters and their machinations. Every single one of the cast members delivered with special praise going to Sydney Sweeney as Olivia Mossbacher and Murray Bartlett as Armond, the manager of the White Lotus resort.
This series was littered with great directorial choices such as the orange hues used in the colour processing. It really set the vibe of this tropical murder mystery. Beautiful shots of the surrounding scenery coupled with a striking set make it a visual masterpiece. The musical score adds to the hilarity and absurdity of the situation. The resort is the physical manifestation of all our desires. It caters to the wealthy and privileged.
While all eccentric and spoiled in their own way, one thing the guests all seem to have in common is that they’re on vacation and yet, no one is happy. The White Lotus displays some of the most entitled and selfish characters. Essentially, people who think they have greater problems than they really do.
The worst part is, they often seem unaware and sometimes uncaring of the destruction they leave in their wake as they go on about their lives as though nothing has happened. Because it hasn’t, not for them. Only for those of a different class who made the mistake of becoming involved with them.

The scariest part about it all and probably the thing that highlights it as one of the best in its genre, is that none of these scenarios seem foreign to us. The White Lotus is a short series that shines a light on the worst parts of privileged people in a way that is both comedically accurate and painfully authentic.
‘The White Lotus’ Rating – 4/5
