The Addams Family 2 Review: Entertainingly Light Hearted!

As a kid I absolutely loved the Addams Family. My favourite rendition is the 1993 version featuring Joan Cusack as Debbie Jellinski. Iconic. Sometimes I like to watch silly kid friendly animated films because they prove to be a light hearted laugh at times. Two great examples of this recently would be Soul and The Mitchells vs The Machines, both of which I recommend. You can find my reviews on those in the “guide” section.

This animated version of our favourite spooky family features the voices of Charlize Theron as Morticia, Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Javon Walton as Pugsley and Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester. Gomez feels like the family is growing apart and decides they must all take a roadtrip to strengthen the family bond much to Wednesday’s annoyance.

Along the way they are hounded by thugs sent to kidnap Wednesday for her brilliant mind. I really like this type of detailed 3D animation. It’s beautiful honestly, a balm for the eyes. With a lively, upbeat soundtrack including a musical performance from Snoop Dogg, it proves to be an entertaining watch for the whole family.

The voice actors are perfectly cast and the dialogue is well crafted. Wednesday has always been my favourite of the Addams clan (followed by her mother Morticia) mainly because her shenanigans (particularly against Pugsley) are always outlandish and entertaining to watch. Moretz captures her essence perfectly.

The Addams Family 2 is funnier than I expected as it’s filled with pop culture and current social references. It’s also entertainingly light hearted. One thing about this family of freaks, you can never question their love or loyalty for each other. The film also highlights being comfortable with who you are and learning to accept the things that make you uniquely different or even strange. While I preferred the first film, this instalment was a solid watch that allowed me to unwind and enjoy the sillyness of it. That being said, the premise is dangerously close to that of The Mitchells vs the Machines.
