Billions Season 5 Review | Disney+ Hotstar & Showtime

I was annoyed about Billions forced hiatus but I guess it’s just one more thing the pandemic has ruined for us. This Showtime production stars Damian Lewis as Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, a hedge fund manager who accumulates obscene wealth and power.

There are many reasons why I love Billions and my rating is based on the show overall not just this season since it’s new to the page. Great acting, entertaining storylines and monologues and an upbeat soundtrack that accurately displays the show’s vibe are all a part of that but the number one reason I keep tuning in is because of the characters, specifically their connection to the lead.

This season introduced us to Michael Prince who’s essentially Axe’s heel, more so than Chuck I’d argue. Chuck and Bobby are from two very different worlds, Chuck was raised in privilege with a map for success laid out for him while Axe on the other hand, fought and clawed his way out of the gutter. Prince knows that fight. They are two sides of the same coin.

The only difference is, Mike sees himself as more of a philanthropist, a good person helping people while Axe is well aware of the monster he is. While Chuck represents the law and therefore will always be a thorn in his side, Mike Prince is his true nemesis.

I’ve always been weary of Bobby and Wendy’s personal relationship impairing their professional one and the show. Up until this point, it’s only been hinted at what lies beneath with these two. I would hate to see their professional relationship and Wendy’s role diminished as a result of any romance. If it’s to be sustainable, the writers are going to have to be very deliberate. Which is why I quite like the idea of her and Taylor having their own stake.

Taylor shows exactly why Axe chose them as his mentee. We’ve never seen him give anyone quite so much leniency and I wholeheartedly believe it’s not only due to Taylor’s value to him but also his twisted way of testing his protégé. Thankfully, even he realises when he has pushed them too far.

Taylor is quite possibly my favourite character. Although forced to make script changes due to tragic circumstances, I think this next arc could actually work really well if executed properly. Watch ‘Billions Season 5’ on Disney+ Hotstar here.

‘Billions Season 5’ Rating – 4/5
