The superhero genre on the whole is in a critical state, making it a challenging time for a new cinematic universe to arise. Luckily, James Gunn’s Superman was a promising start to this new DCU. But could the flame of this torch stay lit with the release of Supergirl? No, no it cannot. Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl is a bad movie, plain and simple.

Beginning with the positives, now, I do think this film has some redeeming qualities despite the end result. Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El is good. Her performance is specifically tailored to the emotional journey this character embarks. I could see this version of Supergirl resonating more as she is included in future DCU stories. Furthermore, I also liked Jason Mamoa’s character as Lobo and anytime David Corenswet makes an appearance as Superman. Their chemistry adds welcome energy and helps elevate key moments throughout.
Believe me, I did not want to hate Supergirl , but this is a script that falls for every catastrophic superhero cliche dating back the last twelve years or so. The Guardians of the Galaxy influence is too prominent, leaving very little creative identity to be found with this film.
Kara’s character arc is all over the place, in which her story seems to take five different directions while awkwardly landing on insufficient resolutions. Her dynamic with Ruthye works overall, but I can’t help but question the intrinsic purpose to Kara’s character development. There was one aspect to her character I did gravitate towards most, but I wish this had been more integral to the plot.
Supergirl also presents one of the worst villains to ever appear in a superhero movie. I shit you not, I can’t even remember his name. He is the most forgettable, inconsequential, and one-dimensional antagonists you could possibly dream up, offering absolutely nothing memorable or compelling to the story whatsoever.
The superhero genre is in great need of a renaissance, and I was hoping the DCU could reignite excitement with Supergirl . This is just not the case, as this film plays out to be one of the most generic and misdirected movies this genre has seen in the past several years.
