Euphoria S3 Review: An Embarrassment of a Series Finale!

I’m sorry it took so long, but I really needed time to process what I had watched. After all, that first season of Euphoria was truly special. But now, I don’t even know what this is anymore. For what it’s worth, not every decision made for season 3 of Euphoria is a bad decision. On paper, a time skip that changes the tone and examines these characters following high school could work. The problem is, and especially considering this is the series finale, that these creative decisions never get to settle in.

This is a point in the show where its identity is absent, and it starts with the characters. I really mean it when I say that no character arc (outside of Ali Muhammed [Colman Domingo], perhaps) is well written or earned. Again, this is the series finale, but it is also a time skip.

Seeing Rue (Zendaya) as a drug mule discovering her faith, Jules (Hunter Schafer) becoming an artist/sugar baby, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) becoming an adult content creator, Maddie (Alexa Demie) pivoting from talent management to “internet pimp,” Nate (Jacob Elordi) becoming a property manager roped into debt, is quite a lot, not even including the several other intertwined character arcs or characters no longer involved with the show.

With all this in mind, Euphoria S3 fails to flesh out all of these characters appropriately. Outside of Rue, almost every supporting character feels pointless to how this season progresses. They add little to no individual value. It’s as if Sam Levinson got lost in writing these character arcs from season 1.

As I said, Euphoria S3 is in an identity crisis, and the showrunner is to blame. His creative have created friction for fans and crew members alike. Labyrinth, the composer for the first two seasons, is absent in season 3.

With his departure, and the pivot to this neo-western aesthetic, “Euphoria” cannot reimagine itself under this new lens. By the time you think it discovers what it wants to be, the series is already over.

I’m done with this show, and I know I’m not alone. Fans have had enough, and hell, even the cast and crew have hit their limit. The feudal production of Euphoria S3 has led to this confused embarrassment of a series finale.
