Soorarai Pottru Review: With people finally accepting OTT as the new normal, the video streaming service providers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have been competing to bring in varied content for their subscribers. Prime Video loaded their library with quite a few movies which never saw the theatrical release during the pandemic. While most of the films were below expectations or average, they have finally hit the bull’s eye with Soorarai Pottru.

Starring Suriya in the lead, Soorarai Pottru, directed by Sudha Kongra, is inspired by the life of G. R. Gopinath, a retired captain of the Indian Air Force and founder of Air Deccan. After tackling various hiccups on the way, the film released on the streaming giant, Amazon Prime Video, coinciding with the Diwali festival. The film also has Paresh Rawal and Aparna Balamurali with Urvashi, Vivek Prasanna, Krishna Kumar, Kaali Venkat, and Karunas in supporting roles.
So, Soorarai Pottru is about Nedumaaran Rajangam or Maara, a former captain with the Indian Air Force, angry for the right reasons, with a burning desire to change the fate of the commoners, and one goal – to provide low-cost aviation service to all. The two and a half-hour film takes cinematic liberty and dramatizes various real-life events, and visualizes the rise of Deccan Air.
For starters, the major positive of the Soorarai Pottru is Suriya. The film runs high on the actors’ ability to perform with any given character, situation, and his potential to improvise the scene. The amount of dedication and hard work this man has put into the film and his willingness to look different to play the younger part makes this film a cut above. His energy, buoyancy, and cheerfulness are exhilarating to observe and leaves us all teary-eyed.
Another significant aspect of Soorarai Pottru, which added to its magnificence, is G.V. Prakash’s spell-bounding background score. The man uses the right chords to captivate the audience, and working with the technical team – he ensures that the movie is rich in audio.
Every based on real-life person films have a similar structure, a rise, a fall, a villain, and whatnot. One thing that differs is their goal or what they achieve at the end of their struggle, yet, the pattern remains the same. What makes Soorarai Pottru is the screenplay and choosing the right performers to narrate the story.
With power performers like Suriya and Urvashi in the cast, Sudha Kongra made no mistake in choosing her team. Looking at the side and support casts, including not going in for a top tier actress as the female lead, it shows how much Sudha Kongra was careful in picking up the actors.

As tight as the screenplay is, Soorarai Pottru takes it time to settle in the first forty minutes of the story. But there were no dull moments or setbacks and no unwanted scenes to disrupt the flow of the film. Near the end, things took time to culminate, yet, the emotionally overwhelming climax makes up for it.
To sum it up, Soorarai Pottru is by far the best film of 2020 and an outstanding movie in Suriya’s career. The actor has been out of the track with his last few releases, and he has given the best comeback with Soorarai Pottru. Backed up by a high-quality technical team, commendable performances, and to the point writing, Sudha Kongra delivers the film of the year. Watch ‘Soorarai Pottru’ on Amazon Prime here.
