She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Review – A Total Sh*t Show!

Luckily, I am not very emotionally attached to the She-Hulk character, or even the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A lot of people hate this show to its core, but I don’t share that passion. I simply do not care. Created by Jessica Gao, the show stars Tatiana Maslany stars as the titular character with Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Mark Ruffalo, and others in supporting roles.

First off, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is a total sh*t show. The complaints are pretty evident to identify. At the forefront, Jennifer Walters never makes for a compelling protagonist. The moments where we identify her inner conflict and struggles fail to prove convincing. To the worst extent, she is abrasive, inconsiderate, cynical, and petty. The supporting characters are hardly any better, but when the protagonist manages to be one of the worst aspects of the show, it is not a good sign. It also stands to mention that the VFX, which are incorporated very frequently, are possibly some of the worst that Marvel has produced.

A persisting issue is the clear lack of focus. There is never an established identity towards She-Hulk and what it sets out to be. Is it a sitcom? Is it a legal comedy? Is it a superhero action romp? Who knows? There is so much inconsistency towards the tone and creative decisions this show makes. Conceptually, these ideas can work. As a cohesive series, none of it meshes. In every attempt to land comedically, it almost always fails (which is a common fault towards the MCU at this point)

The finale is probably where the show fell to an unimaginable low. The last episode of the season is the most ludicrous example of jumping the shark I have seen in quite some time. The plot development and humor is so lazy that it’s insulting. It felt like a blatant attempt to insult the audience and their intelligence. It felt like a desperate, yet pathetic, resort towards forced meta humor with no foundation. There was certainly a way to pull off a finale like this, but the approach taken was an absolute failure.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law encapsulates the issues with current MCU. An overabundance of poor humor, shoddy VFX, and inattentiveness towards fortifying insightful development of a strong protagonist plague this show. Watch She-Hulk on Disney+ Hotstar here.

‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ Rating – 1/5
