Sexify Review: A Light-Hearted Feminist Comedy!

Sexify is a Polish drama series from Netflix and stars Alexandra Skraba as Natalia, a university student who is determined to build her tech startup. When her professor tells her she’s brilliant, but her end-of-term project is boring, she decides to go in a completely risqué direction. Sex, or more accurately, studying the female orgasm to create an app that can help couples easily obtain it.

Natalia is joined by her new rebellious roommate Monika played by Sandra Drzymalska, and her newly engaged childhood best friend Paulina, played by Maria Sobocinska. The three get up to all sorts of hilarious mischief as they figure out themselves and their desires.

Sexify tackles the issues of female sexuality, femininity, what women want, and what it means to be a woman in today’s world. The show uses three different young women who all want different things and have different desires.

Natalia, a virgin who has no experience with guys and has been solely dedicated to her goal of having a successful tech company her whole life. Monika, the spoiled, hedonistic rich girl who decides she’s tired of living under her father’s thumb and his expectations.

And Paulina, newly engaged to the boyfriend she’s been with since she can remember, she’s now starting to question if matrimony is what she wants. Through each of these women, we see the societal expectations they face as well as those of their families. As we see, these ladies are done conforming.

There were solid performances from the cast with special praise going to Sobocinska. She possesses a certain unique look and commanding quality that leaves her stealing every scene she’s in. The background music becomes a little overpowering and annoying. At times I found myself rolling my eyes at this, but the show is quite bingeable.

I would like to see stronger male characters as most of the guys are downright annoying with some even being clichés of male stereotypes. But then again, I guess that is their purpose here.

To be completely honest, it’s probably not the type of show you’d enjoy if you’re a guy. But it shouldn’t be discounted as it presents a genuine side of modern women. Watch ‘Sexify’ on Netflix here.
