Senior Year and The Bad Guys – Movie Reviews

Senior Year on Netflix is directed by Alex Hardcastle and stars Rebel Wilson as Stephanie, Mary Holland as Martha, Sam Richardson as Seth, Zoe Chao as Tiffany, Avantika as Janet, and Joshua Colley as Yaz. The story begins when twenty years after falling into a coma, cheer captain Stephanie gets another chance at living his dream to finish high school and become prom queen.

What started as a unique and intriguing concept went quickly downhill to a very predictable story. That’s not to say Senior Year doesn’t have any merit. There are a lot of jokes I rolled my eyes at, but there were some that I thought were clever. There were plenty of points where I thought, “Really, this is what we’re doing?”, and other times where I thought, “Okay yeah, not bad.”

I will say I think there’s a genuine attempt to make a good movie here, which is admirable, they just fell flat. There was also one scene that felt like queer baiting, so that’s minus a point right there. I don’t think Rebel Wilson is bad in this. She’s putting in the effort it’s just not that complex a character. All in all, Senior Year on Netflix is exactly what you’d expect. A nearly 40-year-old using the medium of film to go back and have a coming-of-age experience.

‘Senior Year’ Rating – 2/5

Based on the books by Aaron Blabey, The Bad Guys is directed by Pierre Perifel, and stars Sam Rockwell as Wolf, Marc Maron as Snake, Awkwafina as Tarantula, Craig Robinson as Shark, Anthony Ramos as Piranha, Richard Ayoade as Professor Marmalade, and Zazie Beetz as Diane Foxington. A heist crew is given a chance at redemption by turning into model citizens.

This is a pretty good kids movie. The premise is simple enough, with the classic message, don’t judge a book by its cover. At first, I wasn’t sure about the animation style, but as the movie went on I grew to appreciate it more. I still believe there was some detail missing in the art. The cast does a wonderful job with their voice talents, I really liked Sam Rockwell and Zazie Beetz, they seemed like a natural fit together.

The movie does well by keeping things exciting and fast-paced. It also provides enough time for us to get to know our main characters better. It does suffer from some lackluster jokes and one or two twists that I do give the credit they aren’t totally twisted, the movie does a good job letting us know what’s going to happen. All in all, The Bad Guys is a good kids movie that parents can watch.

‘The Bad Guys’ Rating – 3.5/5
