Riddick (2013) Review: A Decent One Time Watch!

Talk about a movie with a delicate plot, subtle narration and still keeps us entertaining for a while. Nevertheless, Riddick is a no-sense sequel, that got nothing to do with its prequels. Its just a modest shot to end the franchise on a high note, or is it a boundless stream? Rooted with a feeble movie plot, Riddick takes three directions on its narration.

The first act displays Riddick (Vin Diesel) wandering on a surly planet filled with monstrous dogs and ravenous creatures. Heading on a ceaseless journey, Riddick has got nothing to do other than surviving. After few survival stunts, Riddick reaches a safe house which belongs to bounty hunters. In the second act Riddick activates the alarm bell in the safehouse and bounty hunters arrive from nowhere in a space ship. Being a murderer he tries to communicate with the hunters by leaving signs, as he know the second he confronts them, he is over.

Aiming for the final showdown, the plot sticks with cheesy dialogue and twaddle drama which makes no sense. After all the claptrap, Riddick confronts the team, agrees with a deal as they head for the final showdown where things starts to go little messy and untidy with these alien perils attacking them all in a sudden, as they have to for the movie to end.

Suffering with a low budget, Riddick has got some average CGI and stunt works, in my perspective it doesn’t need to be remarkable because there was no real flesh left on its bones except for the first and the final act. Vin Diesel and director David Twohy may have aimed for a decent box office opening and they are indeed successful in that prospect. I believe that there was no great budget invested in the movie as its an independent franchise, which got no real pressure for its production.

The movie had got some darker shade with Diesel eating all the disgusting stuff and moreover he had done a decent job by enjoying himself along with the movie. The Fast & Furious franchise strengthened him as an actor as he enacted the role with great confidence performing few badass action sequences once in a while. David Twohy tried for a modest sci-fi drama by pulling out few futuristic ideas when it comes to automobiles and other gadgets. The movie went for few intense penetrating sequences which worked out for the most part other than the misses.

Overall, Riddick is a mediocre sci-fi movie which will entertain for the most part, certainly much better than I thought it would be. It has got some pacing issues on its approach, but its nothing less for a decent one time watch.
