Ragnarok Season 2 Review: Lacks a Decent Pace!

Ragnarok is a Norwegian teen fantasy series produced by Netflix. The show follows Magne, played by David Stakston, who receives godlike abilities and becomes the reincarnation of the Norse god Thor. Magne, his brother Laurits, and their mother move to Edda town, which suffers from industrial pollution. The Jutul family, one of the wealthiest families in Norway, are the reason for the pollution caused. Magne discovers that environmental pollution may be the mildest thing the Jutul’s are involved in.

I started Ragnarok early last month, and then I realized Season 2 would be out later. The premise is interesting, and the plotline solid enough to keep you entertained. If anyone should capitalize off of Norse mythology, it should be the Norwegians. It possesses a unique charm and takes on Norse mythology in a modern setting.

Global warming plays a vital role in Ragnarok. It’s a pretty big deal for Scandinavians that their ice is melting. And I’m glad they were able to incorporate the social issue seamlessly into the plot. With stunning set and exotic shots of the terrain, the visual effects of Ragnarok, however, could have been on par with season one. Most of their problem was with not providing enough camera time for supporting actors and special effects. But I was glad to see there was an increase in budget for Season 2.

The acting is solid in Ragnarok, and my favourite character is Saxa, played by Theresa Frostad Eggesbo. We could’ve used more character expansion in the supporting cast; they’re more or less background fodder. The other “gods” aren’t impressive in Ragnarok.

I appreciate that they don’t use silly romance drama in Ragnarok to fuel the plot but make it a sideshow (which we want with teen dramas, to be honest). I quite liked the show and was impressed with what they could achieve on a given small budget. Given the increase, I expected more from Season 2, honestly. The pacing was far too slow for my liking, and overall it left me lacking.

I’m still going to watch Season 3 of Ragnarok (if they make one), but they’re going to have to do a lot more with the storyline and characters to keep us entertained. Watch ‘Ragnarok 2’ on Netflix here.
