Plan B is one of those rom-coms that dives right into the chaos of life, love, and all the stuff in between. Directed by Brandon Tamburri, it follows Piper Brennan, who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand with her weirdly charming neighbor, Evan. Instead of freaking out (well, mostly), she comes up with this wild plan to track down the “perfect” partner to create her dream family. Of course, things don’t go how she expects, leading to a ton of laughs, some soul-searching moments, and plenty of unpredictable drama with Jamie Lee, Jon Heder, and Michael Lombardi bringing the characters to life.

So, let’s begin with the positives. The story of Plan B explores the complexities of love, personal growth, and the consequences of flawed decisions beautifully, all while addressing the weight of societal expectations. Piper’s quest to construct an ideal life highlights the tension between what we think we need and what truly matters. Complementing the themes, the film’s tone strikes a balance between humor and emotional depth, weaving sharp wit into its unconventional take on romantic comedy tropes. It embraces the messiness of relationships, offering a fresh perspective on finding clarity amid chaos.

Furthermore, Brandon Tamburri’s characters stand out for their flaws and the unexpected empathy they evoke, a testament to thoughtful writing. Piper starts as an understandably selfish and guarded individual but gradually opens herself to accepting others, showcasing a meaningful arc of growth. Evan, her socially awkward neighbor, charms with his sweet core hidden beneath his peculiar humor. Cameron, initially a cheesy stalker archetype, evolves into an endearing boyfriend who wholeheartedly supports Piper. Even Maya, the voice of reason, adds depth with her unwavering loyalty. These progressions make the characters relatable and anchor the film’s emotional resonance.

The performances across the board were solid, with several standouts adding depth to their characters. Jamie Lee delivered an impressive performance, excelling in both comedic and emotional scenes, though her frequent use of exaggerated expressions felt slightly overdone. Jon Heder brought charm and endearment to Evan, offering a promising portrayal of the awkward yet lovable neighbor.

However, the standout for me was Michael Lombardi as Cameron; his mega-charming presence and flawless execution make him someone I’d love to see more of. Subhah Agarwal also shone as Maya, the witty and concerned friend, often stealing scenes with her sharp humor.

However, the background score is a notable weak point, feeling generic and too stock library-ish, which occasionally undercuts the emotional weight of the scenes.

One of the film’s notable weaknesses lies in its final act, which feels abrupt and overly convenient. After the big reveal, the narrative seems to rush toward a quick happy ending, sacrificing the strong character development established earlier. Resolutions that could have been more nuanced and satisfying are instead tied up too neatly, leaving the climax feeling slightly underwhelming compared to the rest of the film.
