Outer Banks Season 2 Review: Fairly Enjoyable!

The first season of Outer Banks was a pleasant surprise to me. It wasn’t great, but it had a likeability factor, so I wanted to give the entire show a fair shot. Season 2 of Outer Banks kicks off with our favorite Pogues John B (played by Chase Stokes) and Sarah (played by Madelyn Cline) on the run in The Bahamas (Barbados) after being presumed dead. Meanwhile, back in the Outer Banks Kiara, Pope, and JJ fight to clear John B’s name. And, to be honest, I worried about the show’s general direction, but it has proven it can indeed keep our attention long-term.

Outer Banks always had a Goonies/island-type vibe even before they were shooting in Barbados. In doing so, it has created something uniquely its own. Covid limitations meant Barbados was ideal for shooting, and while peeved (seeing that I actually live there), geographically, I get it.

What I don’t understand is why they attempted to pass off the Bajan dialect as Bahamian. The islands are not a monolith. Not to mention Cleo failing at both accents. No hate but it would’ve been great for a local actress to get that kind of exposure. Regardless, the set and scenery have always been endearing to me.

Though the dialogue could use some work, this season was action-packed and entertaining. Several episodes ended on cliffhangers which, of course, prompted binging. While the pacing became a little slow towards episodes 4-5, the overall tempo of the show is solid. There’s always this agenda to age teenagers in shows while casting 20-year-olds to play them. While the plotlines and drama can seem a little too adult at times, the characters themselves manage to retain their teenage charm.

The showrunners have seemingly seen the error of their ways in pairing Kiara with Pope when she has better chemistry with JJ, and it looks like that setup may be on the way. Rafe is the perfect example of what the rich will do to protect their immoral children, and I enjoyed the expansion of his character this season. The acting is solid, and while some are better than others, they all consistently hold their own.

I enjoyed this season of Outer Banks, and I’m impressed with how much they were able to fit into ten episodes. I look forward to the next great Pogue adventure. Watch ‘Outer Banks’ Season 2 on Netflix here.
