Moon Knight S1 Review: Right Balance of Entertainment, Action & Humor!

The MCU has added yet another hero to their roster and I have to say… this one might just be my new favourite since Spider-Man and Black Panther. This addition stars Oscar Isaac as Steven Grant, a mild mannered museum employee who comes to the realisation he’s losing large chunks of time. When he encounters cultist Arthur Harrow played by Ethan Hawke, he’s thrown into the supernatural world of Egyptian deities.

As Marvel’s first mentally ill superhero, Isaac does a great job of portraying both Steven and Marc. They’ve done a fantastic job of getting us as emotionally invested in this new character as we are in the more notable figures. I was originally unsure of the addition of Moon Knight but now I’d definitely like to see more of him, Khonsu and the rest of the Egyptian pantheon, even if I’m not entirely sure how they’ll mesh with the rest of the MCU.

I guess that’s my biggest critique of the show. It doesn’t seem like part of the greater franchise but rather its own thing. I guess we’ll have to see how that plays out. Definitely one of Marvel’s trippier additions, Moon Knight really tells a story of soul searching. We really have to wonder about Steven’s mental state and I guess that’s a big part of why Konshu chose him as his avatar. The production was evenly paced and I was surprised how bingeable it was.

The design choices for the costumes were perfect though I still feel aside from the wings, Taweret’s could’ve used a bit more work. Speaking of, May Calamawy was excellent as Layla and I liked that they did indeed cast an Egyptian actress for the role. Hawke was solid but nothing really stood out about his performance here, through no fault of his own. I believe the writers could’ve done a better job with his character dimensions.

Moon Knight provided the right balance of entertainment, action, humor and sobriety to make it’s mark. They achieved what they set out to with this addition and I genuinely look forward to seeing his integration into the Avengers. Watch ‘Moon Knight’ on Disney+ Hotstar here.
