Midnight Murders Review: One of the Finest Crime Thrillers!

Director Midhun Manuel Thomas’ 2021 thriller Midnight Murders on AHA Video, also called Anjaam Pathiraa in Malayalam, stars Kunchacko Boban, Sreenath Bhasi, Sharaf U Dheen in the lead roles revolves around a serial killer who targets cops in the city.

After helming multiple traditional comedy movies like Aadu and Aadu 2, Midhun Manuel Thomas displayed that he is skillful at directing mystery films with no trouble. The script had minimum flaws, the story kept me guessing, and especially, the narrative took unexpected turns that keep the tone interesting.

Kunchacko Boban in Midnight Murders portrayed his character as a psychologist thoroughly and appeared to have a subtle method. But, Unnimaya, who portrayed the character of a stressed cop, also did a fantastic job playing her role as DCP Catherine Maria IPS.

Sreenath Bhasi’s character in Midnight Murders as a hacker was the most appealing one in the movie. And the rest of the investigation team supported the narrative well with their performances. Also, Mathew Thomas and Indrans performances are worth mentioning despite the minimal screentime.

On the technical side of Midnight Murders, the camera work by Shyju Khalid was beautiful, and he managed to capture the exotic colors of Kochi city with immense vibrancy. Saiju Sreedharan’s editing made the audience more captivated with the movie on-screen. The background music by Sushin Shyam matched well with the movie’s pace.

Midhun Manuel Thomas managed to highlight a simple-yet-intriguing narrative. At times, Midnight Murders hinted at Jeethu Joseph’s Memories and Ram Kumar’s Ratsasan. Although the ending was underwhelming after the revelations, this movie is one of the best crime thrillers that the Malayalam Film Industry has produced in recent years.
