Loki S1 Review: Multifaceted Storytelling at it’s Best!

Loki sees the much-awaited on-screen return of the titular antagonist and much-beloved antihero, played by Tom Hiddleston in the 2021 six-episode TV series on Disney+ Hotstar. Created by Michael Waldron and directed by Kate Herron, the show also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, and Eugene Cordero in supporting roles. The narrative of Loki begins with our title character, who gets transported to the TVA (Time Variance Authority), an organization existing outside of time and space, after stealing the Tesseract during Avengers: Endgame. The TVA tasks Loki to help them fix the Tesseract or be dispatched from existence.

Loki started a bit too slow, and we see Tom Hiddleston being his usual charming and disruptive self. We watch as he muses over roads not traveled and his inability to trust and be trusted. The character Sylvie (one of his variants) provided another side to his character that’s rarely seen, and I couldn’t help thinking, of course, Loki would fall in love with himself.

The show plays around a lot with the idea of fate vs. destiny, and there are definitely strong religious overtones. Loki’s not as action-packed as we’d expected, but things started to take shape around episode four. Up until this point, I was really questioning where the writers were going with this particular plotline. But as always, they managed to hook me with the direction of the overall story and, without a doubt, these splinters in the timeline will affect the Avengers.

It’s possible that we could see further redemption of Loki’s character as he will no doubt encounter them again during a potential multi-universe crisis. Marvel has boldly transferred the complex multiverse of the comics to the big screen. Bravo. Phase 4’s purpose seems to be tying up the Infinity Saga and setting the stage for the next big arc that we can expect sometime in 2024. The expansive vision that Marvel is carrying throughout the franchise continues to impress me. This level of multifaceted storytelling is what fans of the comics want.

Being able to adapt and fit these storylines together on the big screen is no easy feat and has long been the crux of superhero films. This is a worthy storyline for Loki, and I look forward to how they shape the other instalments of Phase 4. Get up to speed guys because it’s going to be pure pace from here.
