Jupiter’s Legacy Review: Decent with Workable Storylines!

Jupiter’s Legacy is Netflix’s latest attempt to capitalize on the growing demand for previously obscure comics. Based on the graphic novels by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, it stars Josh Duhamel as Sheldon Sampson / The Utopian, Earth’s mightiest superhero and Leader of The Union (this world’s version of the Justice League).

The Union fights to protect the innocent and uphold The Code they’ve lived by for a century. However, the new generation of Heroes struggles to live up to the rigid ideals of the code, and particular events spark public debate as to whether The Code is even still relevant today.

Much of the story of Jupiter’s Legacy centers around the disconnect and dynamics between the older generation and the new. We see how their children struggle to uphold their parents’ unrealistic expectations as they, in turn, attempt to shepherd them. It’s a stark criticism of our previous generation and how the rigidity in their beliefs not only doesn’t apply to this time, but their unwillingness to bend and adapt also hinders progress. Indeed it appears they all have dysfunctional family relationships.

Jupiter’s Legacy introduces us to many characters too early, however, the performances by the cast are solid, even if not inventive. The standout character is undoubtedly Chloe Sampson, played by Elena Kampouris. While the show was quite bingeable, it suffered pacing issues in the first few episodes, and I was curious about the decision to focus on some characters more than others who appeared to be just as important.

The setting and cinematography of Jupiter’s Legacy were good, but I disliked the heroes’ costumes, to be honest. Most of them looked like bad cosplay. Who was in charge of the color scheme? Also, the fight scenes could use a lot of work. Some of the actors looked downright ridiculous at times.

This season appears to be mostly set up for coming seasons, as it focused on the origins of The Union and gave us the lay of the land. Overall, I found Jupiter’s Legacy to be a decent watch with a solid cast and workable storylines, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. I’ll be watching Season 2, but my hopes are not high on this show bringing something new to the table. Watch ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ on Netflix here.
