Judgementall Hai Kya Review: Super Acting, Chaotic Storytelling!

Judgementall Hai Kya Review: When Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao (briefly) acted together in Queen, sparks were flying in every direction. Two of the best in the industry, sharing screen space? More Please! Fans of the two clamored for more collaboration between the two. Now, they are back opposite each other in Judgementall Hai Kya, a murder mystery. In some ways, it reminds one of the 1944 Ingrid Bergman starrer Gaslight. The movie balances serious issues of mental health and gaslighting as it proceeds with its whodunit plot.

Judgementall Hai Kya is the story of Bobby (Kangana Ranaut), who as a young girl witnessed the deaths of her parents. As a grownup, she is an oddball without any friends and someone who voluntarily picks to go to a mental asylum as a punishment for picking a fight. Enter Keshav (Rajkummar Rao) and Reema, who become her tenants and neighbors. The rest of the movie is a murder mystery plot as Bobbyâ€™s mental condition becomes more unstable. The audience is left to discover who is telling the truth.

Acting is where this movie scores the most points. Kangana Ranaut delivers a very strong performance but then what else can be expected from one of the best actors currently active in the mainstream Hindi Films. She depicts Bobbyâ€™s psychosis in a way thatâ€™s almost over the top but not quite – thus avoids making her a caricature. Most other actors would be dwarfed by her performance but Rajkummar Rao is no lightweight himself. He matches Kangana punch for punch and his portrayal makes this movie watchable as much as hers does. The supporting actors all do a good job but this film is owned by its leads.

Unfortunately, as good as the acting is, the movie is let down by its haywire storytelling and chaotic plotlines. To its credit, the central plot does keep the audience involved until the very end but the rest can be pretty tiresome. Post intermission there is another plot involving a stage performance of Ramayan that felt shoehorned in. I also have an issue with some of the resolution at the end as it seems too neat.

I watched Judgementall hai Kya because it carried with it the tantalizing promise of a collaboration between two of the greatest performers of this generation. While the film does deliver on that promise, I would not rate this film amongst the top films of either of their careers. What a shame!
