Ghoomketu Review: Uninteresting, Unexciting, and Unenjoyable!

Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role, Ghoomketu, directed by Pushpendra Nath Mishra, is one of the very first of a multitude of movies releasing directly to OTT platforms due to a crown headed chump lurking around our surroundings, uninvited. Also starring Raghubir Yadav, Ragini Khanna, and Anurag Kashyap as the supporting cast, this ZEE5 original, is in fact, one of the most mundane movies I’ve seen this year for multiple reasons all across the board. The storyline of the film opens with our protagonist – Ghoomketu, who dreams big, aspires to be a Bollywood screenwriter, but has zero real-life experience, and finds it difficult to hold a practical conversation. However, despite being newly married, he flees from his hometown to Mumbai with the only goal to make his dream a reality. And the remainder of the movie showcases if Ghoomketu succeeds undeterred by the strong opposition from his family and friends.

Unlike anything I’ve seen in the recent past, Ghoomketu tosses the traditional “comedy film” template out-of-the-window and dives deep into something not-so-ordinary or entertaining, and is lackluster to watch in its entirety. From the beginning to the end, everything felt so out-of-place from the screenplay to the unnecessary diversions and the character backstories which are utilized for “comedic” purposes.

To cut a long story short, the entire film gave me the feeling of watching a tiring stage play where the characters talk, talk, and keep on talking while the narrative, pacing, and the overall crux of the movie take the back seat in a 1980’s Fiat Premier Padmini. While I at least get the hang of the effort made by writer-director Pushpendra Nath Mishra to diversify his film from other Bollywood comedies, execution also plays a pivotal role in making a project like Ghoomketu work. However, unfortunately, most of the primary aspects of writing to editing drop the ball and make the film even worse.

What works are the amazing performances from the entire cast leaving aside how their characters were written inside and out. Kicking off with our protagonist – Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who does his best to make this oddball comedy work. Even though he completely felt miscast, his nice-guy antics and the introverted behavior, at least felt fresh on the surface level. Raghuvir Yadav as Ghoomketu’s short-tempered father, steals the show with his silly fights and fiery diatribes with his family members.

Overall, excluding the performances from its ultra-talented cast, Ghoomketu is an uninteresting, unexciting, and unenjoyable piece of a mess that doesn’t fit in the 2020s. From the off-the-wall comedy to the emotion during the climax, nothing works in favor of the film irrespective of the efforts pulled in by the entire team. Looking at the finished product, it is evident why this film hasn’t had a theatrical release since 2014 even with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role. Disappointing!
