Coolie No. 1 Review: It is a cold winter evening. The temperature had plunged to 16-degree celsius, and I stepped out of my home to enjoy a hot cup of Karak Chai, a strong flavored tea particularly famous in the Gulf region. The chilly air rushed through my face, and I was not wearing a hoodie or scarf to protect myself from the cold breeze. It instantly gave me a headache. But still, I reveled my Chai and returned. Despite my grueling sore head, I decided to watch this, what turned out to be absolute trash called Coolie No. 1.

Starring Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in the primary roles, Coolie No. 1 is a remake of the 90s hit film of the same name. David Dhawan, who also directed the original, which, in turn, happens to be a remake of another Tamil language movie, Chinna Mapillai. The film also has Paresh Rawal, Javed Jeffery, and Sahil Vaid essaying the supporting roles.
I was finally happy that Amazon Prime Video is stacking up their library with brilliant films like Soorarai Pottru, but they are back to square one with Coolie No. 1. That rhymed!. First of all, a movie that made sense in the 90s isn’t the right choice to remake. I wonder why director David Dhawan would sabotage the name and fame of his cult classic film. I was pretty confident that the movie would be lackluster. However, it preceded my expectations and ended as a bland, monotonous, and tiring watch.
Each passing minute felt like an eternity while watching Coolie No. 1. And Varun Dhawan made it even more pathetic with his weak performance. The so-called comedy scenes in the film never really cracked me up, but it was instrumental in aggravating my headache that even three aspirin tablets were not enough. Varun Dhawan, teaming with Paresh Rawal, Javed Jeffery, and Sahil Vaid, created absolute ruckus on-screen.
I enjoyed only two things this evening – A hot cup of Karak Chai and Sara Ali Khan in Coolie No. 1. Even though Sara was a large part of the commotion happening, she was undeniably beautiful. She showed some maturity in her acting and helped me sail through the movie.
There isn’t anything worthwhile to talk about Coolie No. 1. And talking about the music, technical aspects of this film wouldn’t make sense as they were of the same quality in an average commercial movie. However, I am thankful that the movie had a shorter runtime, a little over 120 minutes. And I was at the liberty of fast-forwarding a few portions of the film and completed watching it in a much shorter duration. Anyway, save yourselves from this film and watch AK vs AK on Netflix.
