Churails on ZEE5 Review: Mard Ko Dard Hoga!

Acclaimed as a cutting-edge, trailblazing television series from Pakistan, Churails, the new Zindagi Original is written and directed by Asim Abbasi and stars Sarwat Gilani, Mehar Bano, Nimra Bucha and Yasra Rizvi in the lead roles with Omair Rana, Eman Suleman, and others as the supporting cast.

The storyline of the Churails details the journey of four women from diverse walks of life and situations, living in Karachi, scorned by their husbands, fathers and brothers come together to help other women going through similar dilemmas. The remainder of the show extending ten, sixty-minute episodes focuses on their audacious mission of teaching cheating men a lesson.

First and foremost, I cannot believe that we, as an industry are at a point where such a progressive and a bold show was made in Pakistan. Shining light on a wide variety of topics from proudly displaying the empowerment of women to holding men accountable for their heinous acts, and creating awareness for the rights of different minorities, Churails knocked the ball out-of-the-park through and through.

Furthermore, the show is also very refreshing to watch, primarily because it beautifully detailed the way women coming together and working as a unit to take down a common enemy. However, moving on to the tiny bit of drawbacks of the show. There is this one scene where one of the main characters was unapologetically homophobic even after her actions got a man killed. Even though that is exactly what would happen to a gay man in Pakistan, but I would’ve liked to see some growth in her character.

When it comes to the performances, the entire cast of Churails did a tremendous job and managed to maintain the components of women empowerment very engrossing with a well-thought-out story. Moreover, the element of men supporting women was something that isn’t normally seen on TV, especially in Pakistan and kudos to the entire team for taking that bold step.

Overall, after binge-watching the Churails in a day, I can say that the plot and the overall storyline beacons audience to watch the series as I have, without interruptions, and in a single go. Moreover, the fact that the show highlights and talks about a ton of cardinal issues in our society, about the toxic masculinity, patriarchy, abuse, and the mistreatment of transgender people is something that should be brought to the forefronts of our minds if we want to excel socially and culturally. Additionally, with a flawless cast, remarkable performances, and well-paced screenplay, Churails is a must-watch and incredibly engaging inside and out. Watch ‘Churails’ on ZEE5 here.
