Chhichhore Review: Emotional, Funny and an Absolute Delight!

Nitesh Tiwari, who certainly has some decent experience in directing comedies before, exceeded all the expectations and knocked it out-of-the-park once again with Chhichhore. Three years after the blockbuster success of Dangal, he returned to the director’s seat with this two-hour twenty-five-minute comedy-drama starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles.

The storyline of the Chhichhore switches back and forth from the year 1992 and the present day timelines. The flashbacks of 1992 journey through the college days of the Losers Gang which includes silly fun from watching porn to participating in ragging. The present-day part of the film explores the more matured side of the gang as Annirudh (SSR) re-unites everyone in a critical situation which involves his son and a few unforeseen events. The remainder of the film showcases the crackpot adventures of the Losers most funnily and earnestly possible.

What made Chhichhore a delightful movie to watch is Nitesh Tiwari’s ability to equally make the viewer laugh and become emotional in quick successions. Right from the beginning, Tiwari was able to captivate my attention by setting up the storyline magnificently and by giving some much-needed weight to his characters. The comedy was on-point and had multiple laugh-out-loud throughout the runtime. Much of it is just harmless fun, the jokes you crack with your buddies at college, the right amount of silliness and jubilant fun who have at that age. It all reminded me of my college days, connected with me through and through, and put a big smile on my face.

In conjunction with the comedy, the narrative was also spread out with plenty of emotional and sentimental which are earnest and tear-jerking. Despite a few speed bumps and the slow narrative in the second half, the remarkably written screenplay balanced out all the emotions flawlessly in the film and did not bore me out. Moreover, the central theme of the movie which sets forth a significant social message was also entangled beautifully with the primary plot and rendered in a heartwarming fashion in the end.

Besides the splendid story and screenplay of the film, the performances also elevated the overall quality a lot. Sushant Singh Rajput as the lead character portrayed a wide-variety of heartstrings alongside the female lead Shraddha Kapoor who is equally impressive with her performance. But, the film’s supporting cast stood out in every single and was an absolute delight to watch. Especially Varun Sharma, who plays Sexa, the porn addict of the gang. He along with his batchmate, Acid, played by Naveen Polishetty stole the entire show with their entertaining screen presence, and same goes to the remaining gang members, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Tushar Pandey and Saharsh Kumar Shukla.

Overall, although Chhichhore feels like a mixture of many films you’ve seen in the past, it still impresses and entertains you in all aspects. It is a laugh riot filled with emotional moments, stellar performances and a beneficial social message to the younger audience. Despite its flaws, the movie is well worth your time and money and is most certainly one of the Best Bollywood Movies I’ve seen this year.
