Nenu Rowdy Ne details the story of Vijay, a happy-go-lucky guy who falls in love with a deaf girl (Nayan) and avenges her father’s death to win her heart. The story might come across as a serious revenge drama, but Vijay is hilarious and makes this a preferable family entertainer. The movie was mainly successful because of the lead performers who have contrasting personalities marking the beginning for both Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara to be one of the more popular onscreen pairs in the industry today. – Nikhitha Kashyap

16: Every Detail Counts, an indie film that is both daring, slick, and the strength of the movie lies in its story. No character is put to waste, as everyone has a part to play and how the mystery unravels is a treat to watch. Karthick Naren’s debut mystery thriller is a superbly executed whodunit. – Siddharthen

3. Dr. Dharmaraju

Streaming Platform – YouTube

[Also feat. in our ‘Best Movies of Aishwarya Rajesh’ list]

Dr. Dharmaraju follows the story of a village doctor who turns alcoholic after his brothers create chaos in his love life, and Sethupathi plays the titular role, Dharma Raju. With a conventional plot, this movie impresses when it comes to the screenplay, emotional elements, and execution and will remain one of the best movies in Sethupathi’s career.

2. Dhoolpet

Starring – Dhanush, Sneha & Sonia Agarwal
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This movie is also feat. in our ‘Best Tamil Movies on Amazon’ list]

Dhoolpet is a glorious Neo-noir gangster drama and explores the story of a boy who grows up to be a crime lord. Dhanush made “Kokki” Kumar a household name, and right from the opening scene of the film it displays a grimy version of the slum life and how crass the atmosphere is going to be.

The dialogues uttered by each character are colloquial and provocative. The cinematography is purposefully claustrophobic. You’re made to feel suffocated with this lowdown, raw tale of the slums. What makes the film special is that the film does not attempt at being decent. Every character in this film are just as crass and disgusting as the protagonist. A dark tale of how crime does pay in every way, Dhoolpet is masterful storytelling. – Siddharthen

1. Nanna Prema

Starring – Mammootty & Sadhana
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

Nanna Prema is a touching study of the relationship between a father and his Cerebral Palsy afflicted daughter. Acting as a megaphone to the travails of parents with children of intellectual and physical disabilities, the film explores the sexual desires of a spastic teenager and a single father’s quandary to dealing with this issue.

Nanna Prema walks the line between hard-to-digest and heartbreakingly beautiful. The level of guts and courage it takes to explore this particular subject with sensitivity and poignancy deserves accolades, and it’s well-conceptualized storyline will leave the audience with tears in their eyes and a lump in their throats.

Mammootty’s quiet and subtle performance of a struggling father brought tears to my eyes, and he has shown me why he is considered one of the biggest stars in Indian cinema. Sadhana, cast as the daughter, is a treat to watch, and she plays her character to absolute perfection.

Just like the saying, “It’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for,” for all of Tamil Cinema’s obsession with masala films and hero-worship; Nanna Prema is a breath of fresh air and the result of the industry’s progress. One of the Best Tamil Movies Dubbed in Telugu.
