23. The Witch

Director – Robert Eggers

The Witch revolves around a family which moves from England to a ranch in the middle of nowhere and is haunted by a mysterious entity. Based on quite a few myths and tales of the 1600s, I found the concept and the element of mystery around the story very gripping. Although the scare factor of the film is very minimal, the Eggers and the performances by Anya Taylor-Joy make this one of the best. – Zoha

18. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

A group of friends get locked in an old abandoned house by some bullies and invoke something supernatural. Based on the children’s book series of the same name by Alvin Schwartz, there are very few movie adaptions that live up to their books, this is one of them. The setting is very creepy, and the idea of scaring someone with the thing that scares them most is unique and, at the same time, terrifying to watch. With an engaging story that progressed at a steady pace to not bore the viewer, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is a winner.

17. Talk To Me

Talk to Me, directed by Daniel and Michael Philippou, is a frightening supernatural horror that explores trauma and connection through its authentic and horrific story. Do you use Zoom, the VC tool? The term ‘Host’ should be familiar to you then Host (2020) explores the story of a group of friends doing a seance on a video call. Coupled with some tight screenplay and technical brilliance, the film was shot remotely with the actors acting as camera operators. Also, especially during this Covid era, this film is a pleasant reminder to us, that when most of the world sulks in a lockdown, some smart people will find an opportunity, and innovate! – Sohini Sen (@cine_thusiast)

Best Horror Movies on Amazon India: Sang-Ho Yeon absolutely exploits the ‘Contained Thriller’ genre in this Korean apocalyptic zombie thriller, set in a moving train from Seoul to Busan as a zombie outbreak simultaneously takes place outside. It’s the perfect set-up for exhilarating thrills and fast-paced action, along with some family melodrama. The film is light on narrative themes but does touch upon the idea of selflessness in dire situations.

Strong side-characters are introduced, without much exposition but with full impact, as our lead character and his daughter scramble to save themselves from the vicious onslaught. It’s not just another zombie movie; it is a fast-paced, action-packed full-on entertainment flick. – Kaushal Munshi

However, things take a dark turn when the disturbed teacher holds the young photographer captive in his Berlin apartment. Well, first of all, I want to state that I used to love Teresa Palmer but seeing her act in the first half of the movie was nothing short of torture. Although, I have to say that I believe the movie isn’t for everyone, but you should check it out, especially if you like films centered around strong female leads.

5. The Cabin in the Woods

Director – Drew Goddard
Cast – Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth

Even after watching this film a handful of times before, I never quite got the brilliance behind the plot. On one hand, there is the cliche story of a group of stupid young adults who go into a creepy cabin in the woods and mess with things that they shouldn’t, and on the other hand, there is a whole facility that controls the scenario to spin it favorably to appease the Old Gods from ending humankind.

So, the people in the cabin are like actors in a movie, the people in the facility are the directors, writers, and producers, etc. and the Old Gods are the audiences that need to be appeased. The fourth wall has been broken so many times in the movie that it’s pretty awesome. – Zoha Junaid

X (2022) is written and directed by Ti West and tells the story of a group of millenials who rent out some space on an old couple’s farm to shoot a porno film. Soon things become eerie, and their lives in turn, are in danger. Inspired by the 1970s slasher films, this movie really brings that genre to life. Brutally violent and extremely entertaining. Best Horror Movies on Amazon Prime India.

2. It Follows

Director – David Robert Mitchell
Cast – Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist

It Follows follows around a bizarre curse dispersed from one person to another through sex, and the person contaminated with this tribulation remains followed and haunted by a mystic supernatural entity continuation that typically annihilates people. It Follows never pursued the hackneyed route with ridiculous jump scares, indolent narration, and insipid direction. The retro narrative style was reminiscent of the 80s horror movies and the director brilliantly used the technical aspects like cinematography and background music to build up the tension in every significant scene. Best Horror Movies on Amazon Prime India

1. Tumbbad

Directors – Rahi Anil Barve, Anand Gandhi & Adesh Prasad
Cast – Sohum Shah

Horror seems to be Bollywood’s new vanilla, which is being blended seamlessly with different genres of cinema acting as other flavors. It was blended with comedy in Stree and Sohum Shah starrer, Tumbbad, does this with fantasy. Helmed by three directors – Rahi Anil Barve, Anand Gandhi and Adesh Prasad, this movie is an off-beat blend of mythology, with a gory and dark narrative. The movie may not appeal the faint-hearted. But it is a fantasy horror that certainly deserves a chance, for making huge strides in the right direction as far as Indian cinema is concerned. One of the Best Horror Movies on Amazon Prime India. – Anurag Rao
