Good Newwz Review: A Delightful Comedy for the Family Audience!

Marketed with the tagline “The Biggest Goof-Up of the Year!” Good Newwz starring Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Kiara Advani in the lead roles closes out 2019 on a high note, similar Simmba from last year. Directed by Raj Mehta, Good Newwz adapts what’s lately working with Ayushmann Khurrana’s films and tries to work on a funny premise that will most definitely enliven the family-going audience, especially the newlywed couples.

Revolving around the theme of receiving Good Newwz for our lead couples, the storyline of the film begins with Varun and Deepti Batra (Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan) trying their best to have a child, seven years into their marriage. And with the constant pressure from their friends, family, and everyone else, they do not find any success as they’re thwarted fortune quickly becomes a nightmare filled with arguments. The remainder of the storyline focuses on Mr. and Mrs. Batra’s journey of becoming parents that involves an IVF procedure and another young couple (Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani) from Chandigarh.

When it comes to the comedic sequences, Good Newwz delivers on its promise and justifies the genre by singularly focusing on the humor. The entire premise itself, on paper, sounds and reflects entertainment, and it transpired well on-screen making the movie delightful and jocular. Accompanied by some refreshing comedy, the family drama and the emotion during the climax also work for the most part. As the film is targeted predominantly towards women, couples (especially newlyweds), it succeeds to a large extent thanks to the overall theme and the presentation.

Good Newwz Akshay Kumar Review

With a 132-minute runtime, Good Newwz, by and large flows with the comical and emotional scenes, but faces quite a few minor setbacks with regards to the predictable storyline and zero to minimal surprising elements. If you’re one in the many millions who already watched the trailers or any promotional material before walking into the movie, you, basically, can call everything that is going to happen in advance. And beyond the aforementioned humorous aspects of the film, there are no other components that will amuse you, counting in the very mediocre music which didn’t add much to the narrative.

Advancing to the cast’s performances, Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan, who were last seen together as a full-fledged couple in 2008’s Kambakkht Ishq, managed to showcase their impressive on-screen chemistry with some satisfying performances. The comedic timing, their ability to compel the viewer in their relationship was effective, from the beginning to the very end. However, from my standpoint, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani stole the whole show as the young couple from Chandigarh, who exuberates that Punjabi swag and humor. Their addition in the movie upped the comedic level even more, and they together did a fantastic job by not overdoing their roles to any extent.

Nevertheless, Good Newwz is altogether an enjoyable movie from start to finish. The humor and the emotional sequences work and will indeed entertain the viewer who stops by the cinema to have a good time. But, away from all the sunshine and rainbows, there are quite a few setbacks which should have avoided to make a good movie even better. However, judging by the in-theatre response of the entire row of women in their early and mid-40s who were cracking up the entire time, this movie will appeal to the family audience similar to Bala, Badhaai Ho, and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety.
