Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar Review: The Ultimate Bollywood Rom-Com Escape!
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, directed by Luv Ranjan and stars Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor as the lead couple, with Dimple Kapadia, Anubhav Singh Bassi, and others in supporting roles, marks a sort of comeback for the traditional rom-com genre in Bollywood. The story follows Mickey and Tinni, a meet-cute couple who quickly fall in love but find it hard to maintain their relationship due to their personal thoughts and viewpoints.
On the positive side, as I mentioned earlier, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, for the first time in a very long time, is a perfect Bollywood rom-com. While it is unlikely that situations like these would happen in real life, you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the movie for what it is. It is a typical Luv Ranjan screwball rom-com, with a screenplay similar to his previous work such as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Pyaar Ka Punchnama, and has super lengthy monologues and comical battles of ego between men and women. Also, the movie has a decently interesting plotline, and I appreciated its total unpredictability.
On the other hand, there were some negatives. At times, the movie went too far and seemed silly. A few tweaks could have made the situations more believable, but I suppose that’s the movie’s shtick. As I mentioned earlier, you have to suspend your disbelief and go along with it. Pacing is also an issue; the movie shouldn’t have been 160 minutes long, especially when the last forty minutes felt like a drag. Moreover, while I have always liked the aesthetics and vibes of a Luv Ranjan production, I can understand that it may not appeal to everyone. Additionally, I can see snarky and critical remarks like “Bollywood only makes films which appeal to the elite Bombay audience” coming from distant regions on Twitter.
A few things I did miss from Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar are good music and comedy. One of the more prominent departments where Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety excelled despite having a very average storyline. In this movie, barring a couple of songs, the music is very ordinary, and the same goes for the comedic scenes from start to finish. The cast delivered decent performances, with Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor as a refreshing duo who shared great chemistry. They were particularly impressive in some scenes, especially during the climax.

Overall, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar had quite a few problems, was riddled with inconsistencies, and lacked logic, but it makes for an entertaining theatrical watch, especially when you want to escape into the magical and over-the-top world of Bollywood rom-coms. Although the story was intriguing, I wished it was slightly shorter. Nevertheless, Shraddha and Ranbir Kapoor were on top of their game, looking hot, and fit, sharing good chemistry, and carried the film with their impressive performances.
