Tsunami Movie Review: A Laid-Back Entertainer!

Tsunami, the 2021 Malayalam language comedy film, is a combined effort from father-son director duo Lal and Lal Jr. It is a full-fledged entertainer which takes us through the lives of Bobby and Anna alongside their family all-around. Produced by Allan Antony, Balu Varghese handles the title role along with Mukesh, Innocent, Suresh Krishna, Aju Vargheese, and a ton of newcomers in the line-up.

The storyline of Tsunami is set around a small embarrassing moment that Bobby (Balu Varghese) has to face while traveling to Goa. In an awkward moment, Bobby happens to square up with Anna (Aaradhya Ann), and this pulls him into a state of dilemma. The plot gets elaborated when things go out-of-control due to senseless handling by Bobby’s cousin Antappan (Aju Varghese) and his uncle played by Mukesh. The rest of the plot becomes hilarious when the families of Bobby and Anna enter the picture and the movie ends on a good note.

As the tagline of Tsunami depicts, Actor Innocent proposed the concept, and Lal worked on that thread to deliver an adequate comedic entertainer. The humor is fresh, despite the treatment of the bizarre subject. Including a decent first half, the second half looked lengthy, even while delivering a stress-free story. Most importantly, the dialogues elevated the narrative, credits to the cast for the excellent dialogue delivery, especially Mukesh and Innocent.

The music of Tsunami composed by Neha Nair and Yazkan Gary Pereira was decent and the full-on energetic song “SaMaGaReSa” was a superb arrangement, where all the prominent cast members sang in their own-voices. The cinematography by Alex J. Pulickal was beautiful to look at, and the editing work done by Ratheesh Raj felt mediocre. The production design by Ajay Mangad did justice to the movie, notably the decor of the marriage house.

The performances by the cast were on-mark with a decent performance by Balu Varghese. However, Innocent and Mukesh were remarkable when it comes to their portrayals, with splendid comedy timing, and put on a classic together that is reminiscent of their golden times.

On-screen, the combo by Aju Vargheese and Mukesh worked well, and Suresh Krishna also had a decent performance to unveil. The debutant female lead, Aaradhya Ann, had a good amount of screen time and carried her part with perfection, reflecting the mood swings.

Overall, Tsunami is an entertaining two-hour comedy-drama with fresh humor that will make you laugh-out-loud with a pretty silly narrative. A laid-back and relaxing watch.
