Anwar Rasheed’s Trance was one of the most awaited movies of 2020 for all the right reasons, and the film fulfilled the audience’s expectations by giving a beautiful treat and entertaining from start to finish. Viju Prasad is a self-made motivation trainer and resides in Kanyakumari with his brother Kunjan (Sreenath Bhasi), who suffers from a psychological disorder. Eventually, situations become even grave when Kunjan commits suicide, and Viju falls into a state of trauma and depression. He later moves to Mumbai, becomes a miracle-worker, changes his name to Joshua Cartler, meets Ester Lopez (Nazriya Nazim) and faces a bit of trouble when the media tries to expose his fake miracle-worker business. Ultimately, as the title represents, the movie takes us into a state of “Trance” and keeps us entertained. Trance Review

First off, Anwar Rasheed directing a movie after a seven-year gap had the audience buzzing and the anticipation levels are soaring high. And, not to anyone’s surprise, Rasheed delivered a fresh and controversial subject, that no one could narrate. At moments, the narrative felt sluggish, and with a swift pace, this film could’ve been the best. The dialogues of the film had the least thing to do and the drama was the most essential part. The script work by Vincent Vadakkan was a bit skeptical, but it had a very uncommon theme, a complete contrast to what we see in Malayalam cinema.

Fahadh Faasil plays his part exceptionally well and his transformation in this unique character was simply brilliant. Trance could be termed as his career-best movie for all the natural acting he had done with ease. Yet another noteworthy appearance comes from Gautham Menon as he lived in his character that carried significance in the film. Dileesh Pothan portrayed a very realistic character with the most screen time after Fahadh, and his scintillating performance deserves some appreciation.

Nazriya Nazim broke her stereotypical roles and offered something very unique and unusual. The combination scenes between her and Fahadh were infused with some psychic beauty. And on the other hand, Vinayakan and Soubin Shahir had done justice to their roles with good bits of acting.

The cinematography by Amal Neerad was a visual treat to watch. No one in the industry can replicate the camera angles and his perfection on capturing the visuals. Music by Jackson Vijayan was pleasing to the core, and the background music by Sushin Shyam – Jackson Vijayan made the film more intense. The sound design by Resul Pookkutty takes the film on a high, in terms of technicality.

Overall, Trance is all about the stylish, power-packed performance by Fahadh Faasil backed by some commendable display from the supporting cast. And the narrative had an extraordinary bold approach and an admirable visual ecstasy. Despite some pacing issues, Trance is still worth a watch at any given time.

Trance Rating – 3.25/5 | Grade – B
