The Woman in the Window Review: Captivating, Empathetic & Clever!

The Woman in the Window on Netflix is a 2021 Hollywood psychological thriller film directed by Joe Wright and starring Amy Adams in the primary role with Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Wyatt Russell, and others as the supporting cast.

On to the positives of The Woman In The Window, Amy Adams amazed me again, starring as an agoraphobic Anna. I am seeing a lot of negative reviews and each to their own, I guess. But, I thought the film was a nice watch. You can see from the opening that something isn’t right with Anna, and the writing is clever as you want to side with her but start to question what she is seeing as she medicates herself, etc. She had a major tragedy in her past that explains why she drinks and is on many different pills.

Living alone in New York City with just her cast for company, you feel sorry for her and end up rooting for her to win at the end. The twists were good, the pacing and plot are slow at the start, so I can see why some people are not hooked and might give up watching. But the fight scene where she battles her agoraphobia and the murderer (no spoilers) makes up for any doubt or confusion you may have.

I enjoyed this thriller, there isn’t much suspense, but the mystery and unraveling of the plot in the second act of the film were neat, and it kept me glued to the screen as I wanted to know more about Jane Russell and if Anna’s family existed.

The director, Joe Wright, is the same guy who helmed Atonement and Pan (2015), so I did have some doubt as those films are like a hit or miss (Pan was the worst Peter Pan origin ever). Nevertheless, he knows how to pull a few twists and make the audience lose their mind as the rug is pulled beneath you, and you’re left reeling.

Amy Adams, the lead actress, was brilliant to watch, and I hope she gets the recognition and praise that she deserves. My only gripe was that the acting by the other cast members (the Russells) was rubbish and very pantomimes. I’d recommend The Woman In The Window if anyone likes to get lost in a mind-bending book/thriller.
