The Matrix Resurrections Review: Heartwarming! Action-Packed!

Writing this review is such an honor as I was able to attend The Matrix Resurrections U. S. Premiere in San Francisco this past Saturday. Not only was it an incredible experience but the fact that the film was fantastic as well made it a night to remember. The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth film in The Matrix franchise, the third film having been released almost 20 years ago in 2003. Make sure you brush up on the first three Matrix films because this is a film that can be fully enjoyed if you have followed the franchise.

Going into this film almost totally blind is the best way to go about it. Thus, I will not give any plot details for the film. What I will say is that The Matrix Resurrections is a fabulous tribute to the past while still making the film enjoyable on its own, not RELYING totally on the work of the past films but instead using the nostalgia to create a meta-experience that celebrate the Wachowski sister’s work over the years. It is the perfect “reboot” that functions more as the next chapter in the franchise rather than starting it up again.

The film’s balance of new and old characters brings a new flair to the series while also admiring the work and dedication of its alumni and their years of working with Lana Wachowski. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are impossible not to fall back in love with and it is impossible to not become reinvested in their story. The rest of the cast, which includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Priyanka Chopra nail their roles and are a pleasure to watch.

The greatest thing about The Matrix Resurrections is that it is a film clearly made by someone who is so invested in the story, characters, and its legacy. Lana Wachowski and her sister Lily created a world that will forever be one of the most popular franchises. The film being a trans-metaphor has helped so many people feel empowered to become who they have always wanted to be and who they always were. Lana decided to make this fourth film out of pure love for the characters and the legacy of the film.

It is fun, heartwarming, action-packed, funny, and admirable. The Matrix Resurrections will satisfy fans of the franchise while also intriguing others to visit the past films before they see the new one, such as myself. I am so glad I immersed myself in the world of The Matrix before seeing this film and can’t even imagine the delight of fans who grew up with the films.

‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Rating – 4/5
