The Exorcist Believer Review – Butchered the Legacy of the Original!

Just as The Exorcist tested your faith in good triumphing over evil, The Exorcist Believer will test your faith in this movie’s ability to have any good qualities to it whatsoever. I guess you can say I’m a firm believer in how atrocious this movie is, both as a follow-up to the iconic original and as a modern-day horror movie.

The Exorcist Believer, directed by David Gordon Green, who butchered the legacy of Halloween, the same is done here with the legacy of The Exorcist. Continuing the story of one of the most terrifying horror movies of all time with a pathetic imitator that follows suit with the many lame possession movies does no justice to the name this film tries to claim. This movie lacks the same narrative focus and apical tension of the original, with no compelling characters to follow and a desperate approach to scaring the audience.

Everything put into the conception of this film screams mediocrity. None of the actors seem to care about the portrayal of their characters. The cinematography is messy and uneven. The editing and sound design are pale and shallow imitations of the specifically deliberate subliminal images shown in the original movie. The latter decision leads to an overabundance of cheap, lazy, and ineffectual jump scares.

Furthermore, the choices to bring back returning characters like Chris MacNeil totally fail when the movie does nothing useful with their presence. All that this movie seems to do is mask a generic possession movie with The Exorcist branding in an attempt to cash in, rather than actually expand on the story.

Overall, not a single movie this year has been more frustrating to watch like The Exorcist Believer. I could go into meticulous detail with every single scene to point out the glaring faults that are present. It is embarrassing to think that David Gordon Green and Blumhouse Productions have the audacity to paint this mess as a “worthy” continuation of one of the most influential horror films ever created. This Halloween season, The Exorcist Believer can go straight back to hell.

‘The Exorcist Believer’ Rating – 0/5
