Tetris Review: Charming! Thrilling! Entertaining!

I always like to look out for a Taron Egerton project, and I’ve been pretty excited for the Tetris movie for a while. And honestly, I had a pretty good time with this film. Jon S. Baird brings such a unique tone to his films, and I think this one is no different. You feel the excitement in the discovery of this game, the thrill of the legal dramas, and the connections that each of these characters have with one another.

I wished he brought more of an unhinged vibe with Tetris, like he did with Filth, but I like what he did here just as much. Taron Egerton is undoubtedly incredible. He brings incredible energy, while still maintaining his charm. It’s a really solid script here as well, and the battles and arguments for ownership of the game are easily one of the best parts, and kept me engaged the most, with some really intense moments that I think blended with Baird’s style nicely.

Furthermore, the car chase was excellently executed, and I liked some of the choices when they would pixelate some of the reality. Also, a random shout out, but the hair and make-up department did such a good job; every single actor had the best haircut and style, and it actually surprisingly added a lot to their characters, which I enjoyed.

I do think Tetris suffered from some serious pacing issues. I believe it could have been trimmed down quite a bit. The opening took a little too long to get into, and the middle portion of the film kind of drags. While there’s a decent work-life balance the movie tackles with the lead, the information about the legal intricacies of the ownership of the game can feel a bit weighed down.

I also think the antagonists feel very cartoony for real-world people, I’d be shocked to find out if this is actually how it all went down. But I still had a really good time with one. It’s super charming, thrilling and has a great story at its core. Taron Egerton could do no wrong.

‘Tetris’ Rating – 3.5/5
