Super 30: Pretentious Destitution | The Memes and the Truth

Super 30 – Yet another magnum opus from Hrithik Roshan. Only one film a year, something he chooses to do, a style only rich star kids can afford. He was launched by his father, Rakesh Roshan, who also directed/produced most of the hits in his acclaimed filmography. A dream that every actor has. He is born with a golden (silver would be an undervalue) spoon.

Also, Vikas Bahl, the director of the film; ever heard of his name before? Yes! He garnered tons of attention by the media outlets last year, thanks to the powerful #MeToo movement. The sexual assault claims made against him also resulted in the dissolution of Phantom Films, a movie production house that he co-established with Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Madhu Mantena.

Moving on, let’s talk about the actual Superhero of the story; Anand Kumar. He chose and strived to uplift the lives of poor students by training them to compete for IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), one of the premier colleges in India. Kudos to this endeavor.

However, did you know that he has a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) filed against him by IIT-G students claiming that he is a fraud? And that he is not disclosing 26 out of the 30 student names who got selected in IIT from his institute according to him.

Previously, Anand Kumar’s claims have also been questioned by the court. He never revealed the names of the students that are being selected from his batch for the IIT. This is a dodgy process of work. Something which he is not transparent about, which smells of fish.

Now, let’s talk about the movie – Hrithik Roshan, the Greek God, playing a poor Bihari guy. He seemed more of a guy trying his best to look poor and disadvantaged. His looks, cat eyes, the chiselled body did not fit best for the character he’s playing. It seemed as if he is trying super hard to look like one.

Few hilarious memes are also making the rounds.

Big banners, super talented team namely Pankaj Tripathi, Amit Sadh, Virendra Saxena, Aditya Shrivastava and high-end animations and visuals do not guarantee a good film. The soul of a movie lies in the vision and the ambition of the filmmaker and the entire team’s work.

There is an animated scene in the film where the student is asked to imagine something, and then a CGI cloud appears on his head! This looks utterly comical.

Also, there is this scene where his students are using rifles to fight on the top of a hospital building. Don’t know why they had to make them larger-than-life characters. Unfortunately, these dramatic elements in the movie are being appreciated by the audience.

Most of the negative characters in the film are caricaturish. The female lead, Mrunal Thakur, had a minimal role and fewer moments to shine. It is more of a softer angle added to the narrative to display the romantic side. Something necessary for Indian movies.

Nevertheless, there is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes behind making such a big movie, and the entire crew should be applauded for that. Hopefully, next time, they work on their casting skills a bit more and choose an actor more apt and appropriate for the lead role. Unfortunately, big names attract more audience, and in turn, makes profitable numbers.

This movie is a good contrast to Hrithik Roshan’s upcoming action -thriller WAR, where is he is playing an action hero and is starring alongside Tiger Shroff. Hope he continues doing exceptional work in the future.
