Sky Rojo S3 Review: An Action-Filled Emotional Rollercoaster!

The girls returned last month in the Season 3 of Sky Rojo after having finally escaped their pimp Romeo (Asier Etxeandia) with millions in cash and their lives (barely). Or maybe not. When Gina (Yany Prado) places a call to her mother in Cuba, Romeo and his hitmen are able to track them down for some piping hot revenge.

I was sad to discover that this will be the final season of Sky Rojo. We’ve followed the emotional rollercoaster of a story starring these three very different women that they almost feel like family. Although they may have differing personalities, there’s a lot that binds them together. Season 3 however, the little rubberband holding Wendy (Lali Espósito) and Coral (Verónica Sánchez) together finally snapped following a crucial event.

The loss of the thing that truly held them together that is. Everything that had been bubbling finally boiled over and all the guilt, anguish and rage came bursting out. These girls were a family and Coral was like the eldest sister. Responsible for her younger siblings and she truly hit rock bottom when she realised she had failed them.

Show creator Álex Pina does a great job with these characters. After following their painful journeys over the last two to three years we do feel very invested and the sad moments are torturous. Every time it looks like they’ll get away, they’re dragged back to the reality of their hellish lives. One thing I do love that is so accurately portrayed is that these women aren’t victims. They’re fighters and survivors. The truth is Romeo was never going to let them go and they knew it. I mean Romeo’s done some contemptible things but I think we see just how mentally sick and unstable he is this season.

On a technical note, I could honestly do without the voice overs. It just encourages laziness in viewers. The narrations aren’t anything you can’t deduce yourself. It just goes against the cardinal rule of showing and not telling. If I’m completely honest, I knew the show wouldn’t go on much longer. The story had run it’s course and they couldn’t keep showing the same cat and mouse game every season.

This is honestly seems like one of Pina’s weaknesses as his shows are always high action and extremely engaging but they always seem to lack long-term vision. Almost as if he’d be better off writing short series or films. His action heavy plotlines appear to be unsustainable really. A great example of this would be La Casa De Papel (Money Heist). Fantastic show, no doubt about that but after a certain point, I’d say right around Season 4, we knew there wouldn’t be much more story left to tell.

I do feel like Season 3 was rushed though, probably not what the creator Pina had intended but that’s the nature of shows these days, particularly with streaming. I enjoyed this season of Sky Rojo and I’m glad they gave it a proper ending at least and it wasn’t just unceremoniously pulled.
