Return to Silent Hill Review: A Tremendous Pile of Sh*t!
When the Silent Hill film adaptation came out, I was like “huh, this is actually a decent video game movie… Return to Silent Hill is such a tremendous pile of shit, and is my way-too-early pick for worst movie of the year. Aside from some decent art direction, I can say with confidence that this film indicates a clear misunderstanding of filmmaking.
Parallel to the story of Silent Hill 2, “Return” introduces James as our protagonist, who is on a wild search to find his partner Mary in the town of Silent Hill. The film is fucking awful in the sense that the audience is forced into this story with improper development of setting and character. The script throws as much of a random assortment of material at you as possible and hopes the pieces land in place. Instead, the characters feel entirely one dimensional, with boring motivations and unconvincing relationships.
The town of Silent Hill itself lacks the atmosphere that made it so much more interesting in the first film, as well as the games. There is awful pacing at play in which the film spams sequences of different creatures rather than carefully cultivating any sort of tension or drama. The acting is god-awful, most notably from our star here, who I could tell was a British actor before I even went to look it up.
Return to Silent Hill tries to impress by undergoing different progressions in the form of big plot reveals. These reveals turn out to be absolute folly in contributing to any form of suspense or horror. It actually makes the film gradually stupid and childish in presentation, relying on loud and poorly produced technical qualities. The digital effects look atrocious, and the film and sound editing turn this film into a mix of visual and audio vomit.
I have nothing but discontent with how I wasted my time with Return to Silent Hill. Even for video game movie standards, this is a bar that has hit an abysmal low.
‘Return to Silent Hill’ Rating – 1/5
