Well, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is certainly a Zack Snyder film, that’s for sure. I’ll get it out of the way right now that if you didn’t like the first Rebel Moon, this won’t win you over on the franchise. Hell, if you don’t like Zack Snyder, this movie does nothing but vindicate you because it’s possibly his worst film.

The Scargiver got some elements that are neat and I can see how in concept this could’ve been an interesting sequel. The production value and design are really nice, you can see where the budget ($166 million) is going, the costumes are decent and the effects can sometimes look pretty nice (Netflix screen compression obviously doesn’t help, but it’s not awful).

But in terms of storytelling, characters, development, dialogue, and almost any other aspect, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is flat and uninteresting. These characters do not go on any journey really. They end up in the same spot they were in the beginning of the movie.

If the movie wasn’t trying to be “Star Wars but gritty,” it could’ve been interesting. Djimon Hounsou as Titus tries his best to elevate this thing, but no one is matching his level. It’s a movie that feels like it’s coasting off of the good will of Snyder and the expectations of a sci-fi movie.

But unfortunately, all of the science fiction elements are super disappointing and the fight sequences are borderline impossible to watch. This movie just doesn’t do anything a sequel should do; it’s kind of the same thing rehashed. I think The Scargiver could’ve maybe improved if it didn’t go the Lord of The Rings and Avatar route of filming back to back.

If Snyder saw what worked and didn’t work about the first, he could’ve given this a bigger and better chance. Instead, it feels like a movie from someone who is trying to do a lot and not really succeeding at most of it, unfortunately. Classic Snyderism (the slow-motion is UNBEARABLE in this one). Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is decent looking, but hollow.
