Project Power Review: Shuts off the Power at the Right Second!

Project Power on Netflix is one of the highly anticipated Originals on the global streaming giant and stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Flashback as the primary cast. Directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost while Mattson Tomlin writes the script (also co-writes alongside Matt Revees for the upcoming The Batman movie). Moving on to the trailer of the film, I found it very charming and made me hang tight for the release, only to observe it losing its capacity. Let’s see where did the film turn out badly. Project Power narrates the journey of Art (Jamie Foxx), an ex-soldier, and his quest to rescue his girl from drug dealers, who are behind the manufacturing and distribution of a recently evolved drug that briefly blesses its client with superhuman capacities. On his mission, he takes help from Robin (Dominique Flashback), a high school teen who also sells the drug to earn few extra bucks, and Frank (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a police officer. One of the primary reasons why I found Project Power underwhelming is because writer, Mattson Tomlin did not utilize the story to its full capacity and settled down with some conventional screenwriting. Considering how the story was unfolding in the initial 30 minutes, I was energized and sat tight expecting them to keep up the same energy till the end. Project Power Review

Contrary to what I anticipated, the outcome of the film was only a fair item packed up with buzzwords. The filmmakers never used the story to its full potential, and transformed it into a standard rescue operation.

On the bright side of Project Power, Jamie Foxx keeps us captivated from start to finish. His quick wit, ability to perform, and entertain was of great help. The scenes with him and the impressive Dominique Flashback were enjoyable, especially the chemistry they shared on-screen. JGL as the honest cop, trying to keep his city safe at any cost, did a decent enough job.

Furthermore, I was expecting some serious action from this movie, and the director duo did provide some brief entertainment and showcased a glimpse of a rather new possibility of the next Human evolution. But, the progression through the power pills, allowing superhuman capabilities lasted only for a mere five minutes. In my opinion, I wished they could have broadened the superhero/superhuman aspect, which would have generally helped in making the film significantly all the more intriguing and engaging. Nevertheless, the limited action provided alongside some stunning visual effects was well put together. Cinematography and the production design deserves a special mention here. The procedure they incorporated to shoot, zoom in and out at different points added to the overall vibe. Additionally, the attractive places they filmed made it even better.

Overall, Project Power managed to lay an interesting foreground in the first thirty minutes, but the quality declined as the narrative progressed. Had they focused more on the Power pill, instead of choosing a solitary rescue operation, the movie would have been entertaining, all the more engaging to watch.
