Pam & Tommy Review: An Entertaining Look into the Not So Private Affair!

I love a good biopic, so when I heard they were making one based on the most infamous sex tape of all time (the sex tape that essentially started the trend of celebrity sex tapes), I thought maybe it’s worth watching. The film details the world wind romance of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. Not that there’s much to detail… they got married after four days of knowing each other. The two are played by Lily James and Sebastian Stan both of whom did an amazing job portraying this rock and roll couple.

The soundtrack is littered with notable 90s hit that I enjoyed. While I felt some scenes were a bit too wacky… there was genuine comedy. The costume, makeup and hair department did a fantastic job with James. She really does look like Pam Anderson. The transformation is shocking. James portrays her with a level of naivety and innocence that I didn’t know Pam had.

It’s important to note that while Tommy’s star as the drummer of Motley Crue was in decline, Pam’s was on the rise. This indubitably affected their marriage. Rand (played by Seth Rogen) is your classic loser handyman (sorry to any handymen reading this). We can obviously see why he felt justified in stealing the tape but his problem was actually with Tommy. He involves Pam in his revenge scheme and it could be argued, she’s the one who suffers most from it. We live in a world where women are shamed for sex. (Who would’ve thought…women like sex too).

The consequences for Pamela were always gonna be higher when in fact, she did nothing wrong. She made a private tape with her husband. What was even more deplorable was not only did Pam have to sit through the humiliation of her tape being distributed and sold without her consent but she’s now forced to justify her line of work in court. Because apparently, having posed for Playboy means the entire world should now have open access to her body.

Pamela Anderson was a sex symbol. People felt a kind of ownership over her. Similar to Marilyn Monroe back in the 50s and Kim Kardashian today. While neither Pam nor Tommy got any justice, we’re able to take the lesson from the show. It was entertaining and gave us a look into these stars not so private affair.

‘Pam & Tommy’ Rating – 3.5/5
