Mrs Serial Killer Review: A Terrible Filmmaking Attempt by Shirish Kunder!

What could go wrong in a film? A mundane storyline or bland acting from the lead actor or, maybe the background score. And if I can pick a movie where everything is flawed, then Mrs Serial Killer takes the cake. A one-of-a-kind movie, where I couldn’t withstand or endure the awfulness and badly wanted the film to end from the get-go.

Starring Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead role with the veteran actor – Manoj Bajpayee, Mohit Raina, and Zayn Marie as the supporting cast, Mrs Serial Killer is written and directed by Shirish Kunder, who also happened to compose background score and edit this god awful film.

In a sea brimming with glaring negatives, let’s discuss the primary one, which is the storyline. And Shirish Kunder dropped-the-ball very early by attempting to execute a western-style crime-thriller. The story details how a wife (Jacqueline Fernandez) of a gynecologist (Manoj Bajpayee) goes to an extreme extent of killing someone to prove her husband’s innocence.

The plot reminded me of a 2020 Tamil film – “Psycho,” which had a coequal plotline. The only difference is that the Tamil film opens with introducing the serial killer while Mrs Serial Killer keeps the obvious “suspense” till the very end.

Subsequently, Shirish Kunder picked a bland, seen-before narrative, didn’t put much effort in fine-tuning the script, and once again, failed miserably in his execution. From choosing the main lead, Jacqueline Fernandez, who already has a history of bad performances.

She was miserably inadequate when it comes to performing, and the way she worked so hard to emote with her facial expressions and body language, was unpleasant to watch. Mohit Raina as her ex-boyfriend and a cop was another letdown in terms of performances.

Moving on, the only ray of sunshine that radiated on a city frozen to eternity with Jacqueline’s appalling screen presence was Manoj Bajpayee, who gives a decent, satisfactory performance. However, the dark, gloomy clouds show no mercy whatsoever as he, unfortunately, isn’t the last-man-standing to save this whirlwind of a film.

Furthermore, the background score plays a crucial role in any crime thriller as it helps create tension among the audience and assemble a chilling vibe through and through. However, our beloved director, Shirish, who also composed the score, created ruckus with his horrendous choice of sound and made me listen to an Ilaiyaraaja song right after the film to drain the utter atrocity out of my head.

What shocked me, even more, was Shirish Kunder decided to end the film hinting for a sequel someday. Shirish, if you ever happen to read this review, I beg you not to attempt another film as a sequel. We’re not interested and cannot endure any more punishment. This film shouldn’t have been made in the first place, thanks to the lockdown, we did not get to witness any flashy promotions. Let this movie get disappeared in the black hole of the Netflix movie library.

Was Mrs Serial Killer that bad for me to go on a rant like this? Yes! It is one of the Worst Movies I’ve watched this year, and I regret watching it in the first place. I would suggest y’all spend your time worthwhile watching anything else than this nonsense starring Jacqueline Fernandez. Netflix produced quite a few decent Originals over the past few years, and I humbly suggest you skip this movie at any cost.
