Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) Review: A Fun Watch!

John and Jane Smith become secret agents for a mysterious organisation and their work puts both their skills as spies and their relationship to the test. The two have to deal with a world full of dangers. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is my first 2024 watch! I saw some promo materials for this series a while back, and I like Donald Glover, so I decided to give it a watch.

The story of Mr. & Mrs. Smith is definitely similar to the 2005 movie of the same name starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, with a major difference being that they both work for the same company and they know that from the very beginning. That makes the dynamic different. The series is also very much a relationship drama, having a lot of interpersonal conflicts as well as the spy elements.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are fun leads to watch. They share some good chemistry and I also like how flawed both characters are. I especially enjoyed the quiet moments between the leads, just talking and bantering so organically and the episodic nature of the show of the plot is also nice. Each episode follows its own mission and you see how the relationship between the two spies develop. Furthermore, I like how they are competent, but don’t always have a plan and things can go wrong.

I am wondering how a possible Season 2 will continue the storyline, which I would watch. All in all, I would recommend this series to fans of spy stories with interesting relationship dynamics and action sequences.
