Lucifer Season 4 Review: Hell of a Lot of Fun!

Introduction

In May of 2018, Lucifer was canceled after 3 seasons of the Devil having fun playing detective in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the season ended on a huge cliffhanger and having that as the season finale (even the bonus episodes fail to quell the fan anguish) rallied the creator and the fans of the show to start a #SaveLucifer campaign on Twitter. The campaign became the number one trending topic on Twitter and subsequently, Netflix picked up the show for a season 4. In fact, the penultimate episode of the new season is named Save Lucifer in honor of that campaign. One for the fans!

The show itself is a mix of a Police procedural and the fantasy themes and the move to Netflix has not changed much with the premise and the tone of the show. The “case-of-the-week” police procedural part of Lucifer has never been its strong suit. The new season leans further into that, as the procedural part of the show is like background music to what is happening to the characters and mirrors the issues in their interactions with each other.

Rationalization

Although it has been a year in actual time since the show ended, the show picks up only a month after last season’s devastating finale. Charlotte Richards’s death has had an impact on everyone and Detective Decker has disappeared for a month while she “processes” having seen Lucifer’s devil face. Dan is in pain from losing Charlotte, Ella is struggling with her own beliefs, Linda is pregnant and Maze is well – Maze. Although there is a very sweet moment between Maze and Chloe’s daughter Trixie in the new season. There are a few new characters this time too like last season but it is hard to follow Tom Welling as Pierce/Kane.

Tom Ellis is the picture of perfection this season and as the heart of this show, his delivery contributes greatly to Lucifer’s fantastic return to form. Lauren German (Det. Chloe Decker) is very good in scenes where she struggles to come to terms with the new reality of her world. The baby story adds a new dimension to Dr. Linda and Amenadiel’s story. Kevin Alejandro (Dan) and Aimee Garcia (Ella Lopez) are stellar as always but my favorite character through this season is Mazikeen (Lesley Ann-Brandt). As always she is full of killer one-liners – pun intended – but the emotional side that Maze gets to display in her relationship with Trixie and her gamut of reactions to her BFF Dr. Linda’s pregnancy is just spectacular.

Conclusion

Overall, the new set of episodes is so satisfying and the fact there are more adult themes due to the move to Netflix which is not beholden to the same standards of censor as Lucifer’s previous home. The move to Netflix is so seamless because it has finally allowed Lucifer to become the show that it always deserved to be!
