Kuruthi Review: Contrasting Socio-Political Thriller!

Manu Warrier’s Kuruthi is the tale that pictures the true self of our current society filled with rage and vengeance and the persistent notion to hold the self-belief. With every character having a different persona built up with varying emotions, the cast of the movie was rich with talent headed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and Roshan Mathew alongside Murali Gopi, Mamukoya, Srinda, and Shine Tom Chacko. Produced by Supriya Menon, a 122-minute thriller unravels the drama where one has to survive one night fighting for their inner beliefs and the evil at the same time.

Ibrahim, aka Ibru (Roshan Mathew), lives a life haunted by the past, where he lost his loved ones in a landslide, finding his inner peace in his beliefs. What is left behind is to look after his father, Moosa Khader (Mamukoya), and his brother. Sumathi aka Suma (Srinda) and her brother Preman (Manikandan Achari), neighbors to Ibru, shares grave losses with him.

One night, SI Satyan (Murali Gopi), who was left stranded with prisoner Vishnu (Sagar Surya) after an attack inside the forest hills, knockdown down Ibru’s house for a hideout place. What follows was the hunt for vengeance, and we have the views to the truth and evil. Who will have the final victory?

The narrative by Anish Pallyal has a deep dive into the communal rages that prevail in the so-called religiously harmonious country, and the uphold of one’s personal beliefs as fuel for vengeance. The writer had succeeded in conveying the plot, within the walls of a house with mere support of powerful interchanges between the characters.

With light’s thrown-upon contrasting shades of people, director Manu Warrier had done a decent job to perfectly set the right tone to the movie in a thrilling mood. With night shots having lion’s share, the cinematography by Abhinandan Ramanujan was top notch with decent edits by Akhilesh Mohan. Music by Jakes Bejoy matched the mood of the movie, with songs that didn’t break the continuity of the narrative.

Each character had their own space in the movie, and Roshan Mathew was the stand-out performer of the movie, depicting the emotions of grief and beliefs in one’s moral values. With eloquent narration and persuasive persona, Mamukoya was brilliant as Moosa Khader, and he set the spirit of truthfulness one has to hold. Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Laiq was a very different character with rage and vengeance stitched to his soul, and he had enacted the role to perfection.

Neslen’s Rasool and Sagar Surya’s Vishnu having the contrasting beliefs having the hefty word exchange between them was purely realistic, and their performances call for appreciation. Shine Tom Chacko, Srinda, Murali Gopi, and Manikandan Achari had done their part splendidly, playing to the script honestly.
