JL50 Review: An Intelligent Entertainer with Rough Edges!

JL50 on Sony Liv is a four-episode science-fiction web series directed by Shailendra Vyas. Although the creators claim that the show is entirely a work of fiction but, the premise is derived by an infamous tale of Pan Am Flight 914 – a plane that took off from New York City in 1955 and landed at Miami, 37 years later. The story of JL50 is about an airplane that crash lands in West Bengal. However, what is so baffling about the incident is that plane went missing 35 years ago but crashed a week back.

The story of JL50 starts with the CBI investigation, which a drastic turn when they find out that JL 50 is a flight that took off 35 years ago from Kolkata and then went missing. Shantanu, the CBI officer (Abhay Deol) in charge of the case, has his own inner mystery that supports the unfolding of this mind baffling investigation.

The performances from the ever-impressive Abhay Deol and the veteran actor Pankaj Kapur as a Professor are flawless. Ritika Anand, as one of the survivors from the crash, looks a little off at times whereas, Piyush Mishra as the other survivor, is pretty impressive. The show attaches itself to the emotional story of a central character, and the story also talks about the devices like time-travel but, it just never dives in proper detailing of such concepts.

Nevertheless, JL50 on Sony Liv is an unorthodox show that intrigues. An entertainer, despite its rough edges and a smart open ending, has left the possibility of a second season. Overall, it is definitely worth a watch and an intelligent entertainer with rough edges! Watch ‘JL50’ on Sony LIV here.
