I Am Not Okay with This Review: A Superpower Story!

The new Netflix Original series – I Am Not Okay with This starring Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff (‘IT’ Movie fame) in the lead roles is based on a graphic novel by Charles Forsman and is co-created by Christy Hall and “The End of the F***ing World” producer Jonathan Entwistle. Fitting right into Netflix’s teen-based shows, the show also co-stars Kathleen Rose Perkins and Sofia Bryant as the supporting cast. I Am Not Okay with This Review

I Am Not Okay with This is a story about a teenage girl, Sydney (Sophia Lillis), who is not only dealing with the problems at her high school but also the complexities of her family, her puberty-phase and her mysterious superpower abilities. The opening of the show portrays a teenage girl, covered in blood and walking down in the middle of a street at night, as this scene perfectly sets up the remainder of the show through and through.

After accidentally inducing a nosebleed in Brad, blowing holes in walls, blasting road signs and whooshing an entire forest, Syd realizes that her superpower works whenever she becomes antagonized. Subsequently, Sophia Lillis’ portrayal of Syd through a powerful performance will make you hate her and comfort her at the same time.

Additionally, the performances by the entire cast are brilliant, and their characterizations are perfect, overall. The wonderful song selections and the exceptional visual effects add to the thrill of watching this series. Also, the retro aesthetics add in a wonderful feel of the earlier times.

Although I did feel the first three episodes were a bit repetitive. The structure seemed to be the same in terms of when and how her powers become evident and how she tackles the situations. But as the series catches pace, the forthcoming incidents seem to be very exciting.

The last episode of I Am Not Okay with This gives a whole new twist to the plot and leaves your mind blown. Season one of this series has seven episodes which majorly reveal the superpower ability and Syd’s inability to control it and then, leaves you hanging and waiting for the second season. The combination of raging hormones and the mystical forces keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next thing to happen. Watch ‘I Am Not Okay with This’ on Netflix here.
