Fate: The Winx Saga S2 Review – Better Than It’s Predecessor!

Season 2 of Fate: The Winx Saga aired a couple of weeks ago and I have to say, I’m happy to see that they’ve made a few upgrades. This season, we’re introduced to new characters and given a better look at others like Beatrix played by Sadie Soverall. We’re also given a further look into Bloom’s mysterious past and the fight that lies ahead for the fairies and specialists.

There’s definitely been a much needed upgrade in the budget of Season 2 of Fate: The Winx Saga. The costuming is a lot better, especially where the specialists are concerned. The girls’ wardrobe has hints of their personality even if they still can’t quite seem to get Terra’s down. She always looks frumpy or like the stereotypical fat friend when it doesn’t need to be that way. So while it’s a marked improvement overall, I’d like to see more attention paid to her. The girls’ outfits and costumes were one of the integral parts of Winx Club. I spent hours drawing them as a kid. Hopefully their popularity and budget can continue to grow to facilitate this.

The writing is a lot better than the garbage they gave us for Season 1. I heard they got new writers and if so they were very much needed. There’s an actual story here now rather than just ridiculous teen romance and drama. While we still do get that, it’s generously sprinkled in as opposed to having the entire story consumed by it. The plotlines and characters mirror the animated series more and there are lots of Easter eggs for long time fans. Even the villain is one we’re familiar with.

The characters also seem less annoying this season and more like their animated counterparts. I’m still not sure about them making Terra, the only plus sized character, gay though. It’s not that I have anything against it but it seems like a means of stifling the romantic potential behind her character. I would’ve much preferred they’d done this with Stella instead who seems to have a more than friendly chemistry with Beatrix. Or at least, that’s the way it comes across. I actually thought that’s where it was heading.

I liked that they introduced Flora, played by Paulina Chavez and that they made her Latina. That’s what we all assumed she was anyway, at least I did. Flora’s a staple fairy and I think they realised they erred in erasing her character initially. I’m just glad there’s a place for both her and Terra and hopefully, Techna in future. The ending gave us a look as to what’s to come next season if greenlit. I’m most interested in seeing how Beatrix’s story plays out seeing as her character was left in a mysterious position.

We now know that they’ve ditched their original idea of having her stand in for the trio of the Trix and instead made her one of the sisters. With this new information, I’m just waiting for the other two to make their appearance. One of the quirkiest things is that everyone has a different accent but it works since Alfea is a school for fairies hailing from all over the world in various dimensions. We also get expansion into the world even if it’s just mentioned and not shown. I expect that given more seasons they’ll be able to adapt these worlds to give us a more immersive experience.

While season two of Fate: The Winx Saga was markedly better than its predecessor, (even the acting was better) it still has a long way to go. Especially if they expect to get a fourth season. I’m not gonna lie to you, based on Netflix trends I don’t see it achieving that because it just doesn’t have the viewing numbers or the storylines to back it up. Though I won’t be mad if proven wrong either.
