Enola Holmes 2 Review: Fun Yet a Little Less Thrilling!

Directed by Harry Bradbeer, Enola Holmes 2, a Netflix Original, features the recurring cast of Millie Bobby Brown playing the title role and Henry Cavill reprising his role as her big brother, aka Sherlock Holmes. The film revolves around Enola Holmes, who takes on her first case as a detective, but to unravel the mystery of a missing girl, Sarah, she’ll need some help from friends — and brother Sherlock.

Enola Holmes 2 continues the weird antics of its predecessor in a fun way while not adding a ton to it. I believe Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill found their footing this time around and they were much funnier and more charismatic than in the first one. Everything that worked in the first movie works in this one as well. The tone and setting were well established, and there’s a very clear vision from director Bradbeer of what kind of film they want to make. The art direction and Michael Carlin’s production design all work alongside the music by Daniel Pemberton, which feels atmospheric for this type of fun mystery.

The mystery within the story of Enola Holmes 2 itself is a little less thrilling this time around. I was more interested in Enola as a character rather than her aspirations of being a detective. Cavill works well here, even better than in the last movie. He wasn’t underused nor did he take away from the fact that this is an Enola Holmes movie. It’s funny how tonally this feels like it fits with something like Robert Downey Jr’s Holmes movies.

I think overall, I enjoyed the last movie more. It was paced better and the mystery was actually kind of interesting, whereas this one goes on for way too long and has far too many plotlines going through it. It feels like they kind of gloss over the end of the last movie. Like, don’t be fooled, Helena Bonham Carter might be very present on the poster, but the same cannot be said about her presence in the movie. A lot of the side performances can feel a bit half-baked and a lot of their arcs are pretty one-note.

Enola Holmes 2 just has too much on its plate and could have been trimmed down a hair. The action is fun, the adventure is there, and if you like a nice family watch and enjoyed the first movie, you’ll probably like this. If the first movie wasn’t your thing, you might be rolling your eyes at this one.
