On the third episode of Double Rewind, Jillian and Stephanie both watch the 2002 sports comedy-drama Bend It Like Beckham, directed by Gurinder Chadha, for the first time. The movie follows Parminder Nagra’s character Jess as she must navigate her dreams of becoming a football player (soccer in the US) while her parents have a set path they wish she would follow instead.
Jillian and Stephanie discussed how this soccer film compared to other sports films in the genre as well as the cultural elements in the movie about a girl wanting to defy her parent’s strict expectations of her. Various trivia about the film came up, one in which it was said that “many Female English Football Players have said this film helped inspire them in their respected careers.” The next film the twins will discuss next week will be Rob Reiner’s classic 1987 film The Princess Bride.
