Don’t Look Up Review: Highly Entertaining and Comical!

Dr. Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) are two astronomers who discover that a comet is headed directly towards Earth, which will ultimately destroy the entire planet. As they attempt to share their findings with the world they are hit with obstacles they never would have imagined possible.

As the end of the year approaches, studios often release the films they are campaigning for the Academy Awards. Don’t Look Up starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Timothee Chalamet, Tyler Perry, and more, has enough of a star-studded cast to assume it would make its way into the 2022 award season. However, what was a pleasant surprise for me was that Don’t Look Up is not a film using popular names to make up for a subpar script. In fact, its cast is utilized well to create an accurate allegory about climate change.

Although Don’t Look Up clearly takes a side on the issue, it doesn’t use its time to necessarily divide us even further, but instead to highlight how we are all to blame for the combined deterioration of our planet, whether that is not listening to science, not doing our part, or not doing our own research. The script combines political satire that is so accurate it doesn’t feel exaggerated, given the way America has already proven its absolute inability to come together on life-altering issues.

The script doesn’t fall into the “ridiculous” plotline category that sometimes SNL skits fall into. The film maintains a more serious tone to mirror how “doomed” we are while still having fun with its ridiculing nature. What makes Don’t Look Up the strongest is that it is simply highly entertaining and comical. Its humor is not just satirical humor that comes entirely from politics but the dialogue and comments that come in between the larger scenes are hysterical.

It feels more like a comedy with a message than a film trying to make a satirical message comical, in my opinion. I was engaged for the entire two hours and eighteen minutes. Don’t Look Up is a film I would certainly watch again soon and in the future. It will be released on Netflix on Christmas Eve but can be seen in select theaters now!
