Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Review: A Wonderfully Put Together Sisterhood Tale!

In Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, the narrative follows the lives of two cousins who cannot stand each other, stash their differences aside when life throws them a curveball, and all they need is some sister love. Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava (who previously helmed Lipstick Under My Burkha), the film stars Bhumi Pednekar and Konkona Sensharma in the lead roles with Amol Parashar and Vikrant Massey filling as the supporting cast.

Set in Greater Noida, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare opens with Kaajal (Bhumi Pednekar) adjusting to her life in an urban city and takes time to find a place to live and get a job that she is interested in. On the other side, her cousin Radha (Konkona Sensharma) finds herself in a mid-life crisis, where her personal and professional life overtakes her freedom alongside a multitude of other traditional problems. Encompassed within a tight 120-minute runtime, the remainder of the film showcases how both sisters overcame these situations mentally and physically.

Solely focusing on the two lead characters and their journeys, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare benefits when it comes to the establishment of the characters and developing them from start to finish. Kitty, a.k.a Kaajal, played by Bhumi Pednekar, hails from a lower-caste Bihari family, and her journey of fitting amidst the chaos of an urban city in the suburbs of Delhi unwinded remarkably throughout the runtime.

From finding her originality, surviving and living on her own, experiencing a few sensibilities of having an odd job, going through a dating phase, losing virginity to making errors and learning from them. Her character had a story arc from being a feeble person to standing up for herself and gaining the courage to back up what she is doing in life.

On the other hand, Konkona Sensharma plays an everyday-traditional Indian housewife whose life is overwhelmed by work, family, and the conventional chatter by her colleagues at work and the neighborhood gang of married women. And during the course of the film, whether by comparing herself to Kitty or by getting satiated with her monotonous lifestyle, she begins to take chances, directs attention to her personality, and attempts to live her life irrespective of the decisions she makes. As a result, equivalent to the character arc of Kitty, we also see a variance in Dolly by the climax compared to the very beginning.

Nevertheless, along with the individual character work, the chemistry between Dolly and Kitty is also showcased effectively through some remarkably-written scenes. The love-hate bond both the sisters share, the straightforward, no-filter dialogue, and looking out each other when they needed each other’s company the most helped steer the overall narrative of the film in a proper direction.

Apart from the characters, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare also benefits from having a strong cast as every supporting character had a significant part to play in the movie. And, unsurprisingly, everyone from Amol Parashar, Aamir Bashir to Karan Kundra, Vikrant Massey, and Kubbra Sait as Kitty’s friend performed well.

However, the leading ladies steal the show from start to finish with Bhumi Pednekar displaying her stellar acting range and Konkona Sensharma playing an unorthodox role after a very long time. Although their complicated characters are nowhere near perfect, their genuine performances resulted in me (the viewer) rooting for the decisions they decide to take all along.

Overall, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare purely concentrates on the two primary characters of Dolly and Kitty, and the narrative is structured around them and navigated based on the decisions they take in life. And on that standpoint, the movie succeeds from the beginning to end, their thoroughly written characters and the solid performances from Konkona and Bhumi pilot the film on a captivating note.
