Do Revenge Review: Vengeful! Messy! Fun!

Do Revenge on Netflix, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, stars Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke in the primary roles, with Rish Shah, Sophie Turner, and Austin Abrams, in supporting roles. The movie’s storyline was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train and is about Drea and Eleanor, who agree to go after one each other’s bullies.

So first off, if you’re a Maya Hawke fan, you’re gonna get a kick out of Do Revenge. She’s the reason why I wanted to check this one out. There are plenty of things to like about this movie, especially the leads. Hawke and Camila Mendes have stellar chemistry in this teen-comedy. You buy both of their motives while being in very different cliques, but when they come together it feels justified.

Most of the teenage cast is very good in Do Revenge (but Hollywood is so bad at casting people that look like high schoolers. I love Maya Hawke, but she looks like she’s in her 20s, sorry). But, moving on, the selling point of this movie—the revenge—is incredible. It’s satisfying, it’s pretty hilarious, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously at all which is when this movie shines.

The humor can be pretty funny at times, however it can also overstay its welcome. And some of the jokes fall completely flat, but I was honestly able to overlook that in a movie like this, it’s more about the situational humor than the one-liners and punchlines, and the situations get pretty ridiculous. I was enjoying the first half of this movie, but then it keeps going. The story gets pretty nuts pretty fast, there are plot twists that happen one after another (mainly to keep the “revenge” aspect of the movie-going), and some of them work, and some of them don’t.

They re-contextualize the plot of the first half of the film in a dramatic way that I’m not so sure would hold up on a re-watch despite them trying to convince you that it makes sense. That might sound vague, but it’s a pretty big plot twist. It’s not like a M. Night Shyamalan twist that is somewhat subtle and was hinted all along, it was just kinda out of left field in my opinion.

Do Revenge also threw in a couple of random love interest subplots, and it felt like those storylines went nowhere and wasted a lot of potential (I was excited to see Talia Ryder in this and was severely let down). It’s just kind of tacked on, it doesn’t add ANYTHING to the story. But the end brought it around nicely. Definitely a mixed bag overall. Some great moments, but it goes on WAY too long.
